NPD Reports December 2016 Video Game Sales

npd-group copyTotal industry spending for video game hardware, full game software, and accessories from Nov. 27 to Dec. 31, 2016 declined 15 percent to $2.8 billion, with declines in spending across all categories, according to analysis from The NPD Group.

Video games hardware sales compared to the same period last year decreased 20 percent from $1.24 billion last year to $994.9 million this year; video games software decreased 12 percent from $1.35 billion last year to $1.19 billion this year; and video games accessories decreased 15 percent from $640.7 million last year to $547.6 million this year.

“Unfortunately the release of the Xbox One S and the PlayStation 4 Pro did not generate dollar spending growth,” says Sam Najji, NPD’s video game industry analyst. “Although the combined ARP for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 systems decreased by 15 percent, consumers bought 7 percent fewer units. The NES Classic Edition saw an increase in sales of 14 percent in December compared to its November launch.”

The top 10 games based on dollar sales are Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Final Fantasy XV, Battlefield 1Madden NFL 17, NBA 2K17, Watch Dogs 2, Grand Theft Auto V, Pokémon Sun, FIFA 17, and Pokémon Moon.
