Total industry spending for video game hardware, software, and accessories from Jan. 29 to Feb. 25, 2017 declined 21 percent to $724 million compared to last year, according to analysis from The NPD Group.
Video games hardware sales compared to the same period last year decreased 30 percent from $292.2 million last year to $204 million this year; video games software decreased 14 percent from $405 million last year to $344.2 million this year; and video games accessories decreased 21 percent from $191 million last year to $150.8 million this year.
“Total hardware spending in February declined 30 percent versus February 2016 to $204M. Console hardware accounted for 82 percent of the total declines as both average retail pricing and units sold fell versus a year ago,” says Mat Piscatella, NPD’s video game industry analyst. “The PlayStation 4 was the top-selling hardware system in the month and, for the fifth month running, the PlayStation 4 Slim System 500GB Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End Bundle was the month’s top selling console. In the portable space, 3DS unit sales were up 77 percent versus January 2017 driven by the 3DS New Galaxy Style model and the 3DS Limited Pikachu Yellow model.”
The top 10 games based on dollar sales across all platforms are For Honor, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2k17, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, Madden NFL 17, Battlefield 1, Nioh, and Overwatch.
