Tooo Company, based out of Hong Kong, has named Brent Reese and his company, SpotMode, LLC, as the exclusive North American distributor of PopCharmz. The new charms are soft, embroidered pieces that combine plush and collectibility, and are geared towards children and tween girls. PopCharmz come in trendy pop-culture shapes that can be attached to nearly anything—a wrist, a book bag, a locker—and are designed to be collected, traded, worn, and displayed. PopCharmz will be distributed in unique collections throughout the year.

New Study Says Elmo Helps Toddlers’ Early Learning Skills

New research shows that children’s character Elmo is more effective in helping toddlers learn basic skills than if the toddlers were taught by unrecognizable faces.

Researchers from the Children’s Digital Media Center at Georgetown University conducted an experiment using three groups of 21-month-old toddlers. The first group watched a video of an Elmo puppet placing nesting cups inside one another, the second group saw the same task being performed by an unknown character puppet with the same Elmo-like voice, and the third group did not watch a video.

When applying what they had learned to their own nesting cups, the first group was able to complete the task significantly better than both the second and third groups. The first group was also more likely to smile and say the character’s name.

Lego Group Awarded License To Create Lego DC Universe Super Heroes

Warner Bros. Consumer Products and DC Entertainment have extended their partnership with The Lego Group, giving Lego complete access to its vast library of DC Comics characters and stories in order to create toys inspired by the world of DC Comics. Thirteen iconic superheroes will be featured in mini figure form, including Superman, Lex Luthor, and Wonder Woman. Buildable characters will include Batman, The Joker, and Green Lantern. The construction sets, mini figures, and buildable characters and creatures will be launching in January.

GMA-Discovered Lexi St. George Stars In WowWee Commercial

Lexi St. George, the teen singer discovered by Good Morning America‘s “One Week To Hit It Big: Pop Star” series, has landed her first commercial deal with WowWee’s Paper Jamz Pro Series Microphone. The commercial will feature Lexi’s debut single and video, “Dancing To The Rhythm.”

The Paper Jamz Pro Series Microphone lets kids of all ages discover their inner pop star. Tunes can be downloaded from the user’s own music files onto the microphone. Using the built-in controls, kids can add in a “perfect pitch,” a chorus, a harmony, vibrato, and other vocal effects. The Paper Jamz Pro Series Microphone has a suggested retail price of $29.99 and is now available at Walmart. It will also be arriving at retailers such as Toys “R” Us, K-Mart, and Target later this month.

U.S. Release of The Gruffalo DVD

NCircle Entertainment has recently announced the upcoming U.S. distribution of The Gruffalo, a 2011 Academy-Award nominated short film that follows the story of a clever mouse who ventures out into the forest for dinner and has to fend off a series of hungry predators along the way. The film is narrated by Helena Bonham Carter and includes the voices of Tom Wilkinson, John Hurt, and Robbie Coltrane. The Gruffalo is an adaptation of the internationally bestselling children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Alex Scheffler.

The DVD will be released on August 16 for a suggested retail price of $9.99.

The Breast Milk Baby Doll Releases in the U.S.

Berjuan Toys, known for its doll lines, is introducing The Breast Milk Baby Doll to the U.S. The news is being met with a mixture of controversy and endorsements due to the doll’s primary feature that allows young girls to simulate the breast-feeding process.

The Breast Milk Baby Doll comes with a halter-top that girls wear as a vest with flower decorations positioned over where the nipples would be. When the doll’s face is brought near the embedded sensors in the flowers, the baby doll emits a series of soft, suckling sounds and makes motions. According to Dennis Lewis, U.S. representative for Berjuan, the doll has sold millions in Europe.

Clifford The Big Red Dog For Kohl’s Cares Program

Scholastic’s Clifford The Big Red Dog will be the newest face of the Kohl’s Cares program, bringing select merchandise to Kohl’s stores across the nation. Kohl’s customers will have exclusive access to four two-in-one edition hardback Clifford storybooks and coordinating plush dolls.

From now, until the end of September, shoppers will be able to purchase Clifford books and plush toys for $5 each, with 100 percent of the profit going towards children’s health and education initiatives nationwide.

New Star Trek PADD iPad App

Star Trek has gone mobile with CBS Interactive‘s launch of the Star Trek PADD app for the iPad. Fans of Star Trek will now be able to download a replica of the LCARS interface to their iPads for an official Star Trek database of extensive information covering aliens, ships, places, people, and technologies, as well as an episode guide to the series.

Developed by ArcTouch, the Star Trek PADD (Personal Access Display Device) app is based on the fictional computer operating system depicted in the television series, complete with a recognizable computer voice and sound effects from the show. The app is now available on the iTunes App Store for $4.99.
