COMMENTARY: Playmates Has Turtle Power

Those teenage “heroes in a half-shell” are back, and their pizza-slinging and sewer-crawling skills are better than ever. As a child of the late 80s and early 90s, I was a huge fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and all their Southern California-inspired catch phrases—from “cowabunga” to “tubuloso.” Lucky for me, if I’m in need of a totally far out fight scene featuring Michelangelo and Shredder’s foot soldiers, I can flip to Nickelodeon’s re-vamp of the 1987 cartoon. Playmates Toys, which produced the toys for the original television series, is also back with fresh products featuring the new generation of Splinter’s ninja apprentices. Here are a few favorites from Playmates Toys’ TMNT lineup:

With the ability to fling out projectiles to take out the enemy, the Flingers Deluxe Action Figures come fully equipped and ready for battle. Kids simply load the different projectiles into the backpacks of each figure, roll the figures across a hard surface and watch as the contents of their backpacks launch. [Read more...]

Hot Wheels Sets a First-Ever World Record at Indy 500

hotwheels_2On the eve of the Indianapolis 500, Hot Wheels, along with four kids, set a record for the world’s longest toy race track. Staged on the front straightaway of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Mattel’s Hot Wheels created a 1 mile-long, four-lane toy racetrack to celebrate its World’s Best Driver Championship event. Kids were invited from all over the country to race four toy cars around the track. Coached by racing legends Mario and John Andretti, Christopher Bienusa, a 12-year-old from Alexandria, Minn., emerged as the victor. Bienusa celebrated in traditional Indy 500 fashion by drinking a bottle of milk and kissing the fabled Yard of Bricks on the speedway. More than 1,000 pieces of custom-made Hot Wheels track were used to build the longest toy track in history. Alexandria Industries manufactured the nearly 4,700 pounds of aluminum extrusions to withstand outdoor elements such as heat and rain.

COMMENTARY: Playmobil Brings Summer to the Construction Aisle

Construction toy company Playmobil has a number of new offerings that will enhance any kid’s summer play experience. Growing up in Hawaii, my summers (or any season, for that matter) were spent outdoors—on the beach, hiking a valley trail, or in a park. I was also into construction toys, so I’m stoked to see Playmobil combining outdoor play with my favorite play pattern. The new Fire Flyer and the Deep Sea Submarine with Underwater Motor will take kids from the air to the water.

PLAY 8755 32 #The Playmobil Fire Flyer, for kids ages 6 and up, is a light-weight, hand-launched glider in black, red, and yellow with flame detailing on the side. The glider, designed for outdoor play, includes a pilot mini figure that kids can sit in the cockpit. It also comes with a golden pilot badge kids can wear, which I love (or would’ve loved as a kid, considering I was obsessed with collecting wings from flight attendants on all our family trips). The glider is made from an ultra-light material making it safe for kids to play a game of catch on the beach or in the park. [Read more...]
