The Toy Industry Association (TIA) is now accepting toy, game, and property submissions across 12 categories for the 2016 Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards. The nomination period will close at 5 p.m. PT on October 2, and finalists will be unveiled on November 17. Winners will be announced at the TOTY Awards ceremony in February.
Through September 1, toy and gaming industry professionals may submit nominations online for the 2015 Toy & Game Inventor of the Year (TAGIE) Awards, scheduled to take place during Chicago Toy & Game Week. Presented by Hasbro, the awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of inventors, designers, and industry leaders.
The nominees have been announced for the Games for Change Awards, which celebrate the year’s best social impact games. The award categories include Best Gameplay, Most Significant Impact, and Most Innovative. The eight finalists, narrowed down from a field of more than 150 titles, will also be considered for the top honor, Game of the Year, which is awarded to the game that best exemplifies all three categories.
A jury of leaders from the gaming, philanthropic, media, and tech communities evaluated all game submissions. According to the Toy Industry Association (TIA), a record-breaking 58,000 consumer votes were cast online during the voting period for the 15th annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards. Women in Toys (WIT) is now accepting nominations for the 11th Annual Wonder Women in Toys, Licensing & Entertainment Awards. Industry stakeholders are invited to nominate a co-worker, client, associate, family member, or acquaintance for consideration in one or more of the following categories: Rising Star, PR or Social Media, Manufacturer, Designer or Inventor, Licensing or Entertainment, Social Responsibility, and Marketing or Advertising. All nominations are due by January 15. Nominations may be submitted online.
Winners in the eight categories will be announced at an awards dinner, scheduled to take place on February 15 during North American International Toy Fair week in New York City. For the first time, the annual awards dinner will be held at Pier 60 at Chelsea Piers. A ticket and table may be purchased at the WIT website.
The Award Selection Committee and WIT Board of Directors will review all nominees and select the winners for each category. All nominees must be WIT members in order to be eligible to win; however, WIT members and non-members are invited to submit nominations.
The Chicago Toy & Game Group has crowned this year’s recipients of the 2014 Toy and Game Inventor of the Year (TAGIE) Awards. More than 400 guests representing 23 countries gathered at Chicago’s historic Navy Pier Grand Ballroom last Friday to toast today’s top playthings.

Today, the Toy Industry Association (TIA) announced the 83 finalists for the prestigious 2015 Toy of the Year Awards (TOTY). Between now and January 11, toy consumers of all ages can visit www.toyawards.org to vote for their favorite toys, games, and properties across 12 categories.
The 2015 finalists were selected from more than 600 nominees submitted for consideration by 159 companies. Sixty academics, journalists, toy trend experts, play therapists, toy inventors and designers, and toy retailers staffed the nomination committees that narrowed the field to the slate of finalists.
Votes from mass retailers, specialty toy retailers, media, TIA members, and consumers will be weighted and used to determine each of the 12 category winners. The winners—including the overall Toy of the Year and the People’s Choice awards—will be announced at the TOTY Awards ceremony held on February 13, 2015 as the kick-off to the 112th North American International Toy Fair. During the 2014 Toy & Game Inventor of the Year (TAGIE) Awards, the Chicago Toy & Game Group will present this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award to The Kohner Family, which includes brothers Frank and Paul Kohner and Paul’s son, Michael Kohner. The latter will accept the award on behalf of The Kohner family, which has worked in the toy and game industry for almost 75 years.
In 1940, Paul Kohner founded Kohner Brothers alongside Michael’s uncle, Frank Kohner, and what began as a wooden bead company quickly transformed into a toy-making endeavor. The Kohner Brothers cemented their place with the introduction of the game, Trouble, featuring the Pop-O-Matic dice device.
In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award, the In Memoriam award will be given to the family of Bill Goodman, while Hasbro Co. will receive the 2014 TAGIE Excellence in Character Design award for the Transformers toys in celebration of the brand’s 40th anniversary. The TAGIE Awards are scheduled to take place in the Grand Ballroom of Chicago’s Navy Pier on November 21.
