Toys “R” Us Canada Honors Jakks Pacific for Cabbage Patch Kids Launch

JakksJakks Pacific was honored with the 2013 Product Launch of the Year award from Toys “R” Us Canada. Toys “R” Us recognized Jakks Pacific both for its overall business partnership, as well as the exceptional launch of the 30th anniversary of Cabbage Patch Kids last year.

For the anniversary, Jakks Pacific Canada and Toys “R” Us Canada appealed to multiple generations with a program that included media events, exclusive product offerings, and a 30th birthday celebration in select Toys “R” Us stores throughout Canada. The award marks the third consecutive year that Jakks has received an honor by the toy retailer.

First Loomy Awards Loom Large This Month

“Loomers” from far and wide are invited to submit their creations for the first-ever award for loom bracelet fanatics: the First Annual Loomy Awards. Sponsored by The Original Loom Boom, winners will be chosen from four categories: Best Bracelet, Coolest Charm, Wackiest Wearable, and Best Loom Boom. Three winners will each receive a $250 gift card, and one grand prize winner will receive a $500 gift card. In addition, all winners will receive a special edition of The Original Loom Boom.

Entries are already being accepted at The Original Loom Boom’s Facebook page, and winners will be announced on a live web award show on April 30.

SBA to Host National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C.

Ryan McFarland from Strider Sports International Inc. has won South Dakota’s Small Business Person of the Year. He will join winners from the other 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam at the U.S. Small Business Administration’s National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C., from May 15 to 16. At the conference, a National Small Business Person of the Year for 2014 will be chosen and the winners will have opportunities to meet with top SBA officials and national business leaders.

Wal-Mart’s Toy Supplier of the Year Award Goes to Spin Master

Hasbro Named as a 2014 World’s Most Ethical Company

Hasbro logoHasbro Inc. has been recognized by the Ethisphere Institute, an independent center of research promoting best practices in corporate ethics and governance, as a 2014 World’s Most Ethical Company.

Hasbro is one of eight consumer products companies honored this year. It marks the third time that Hasbro has been recognized with this award, which recognizes organizations that continuously raise the bar on ethical leadership and corporate behavior.

The Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient framework and methodology was determined, vetted, and refined by advice and insights from a network of thought leaders, as well as the World’s Most Ethical Company Methodology Advisory Panel. Scores were generated in five key categories: ethics and compliance program; reputation, leadership and innovation; governance; corporate citizenship and responsibility; and culture of ethics.

Hasbro Named a Winner of 2014 Climate Leadership Award, Takes Home Gold for Green Efforts

Hasbro logoHasbro Inc. has been named as a winner of the Climate Leadership Awards for the second time, acknowledging the company’s efforts to reduce carbon pollution and address climate change. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, and The Climate Registry honored Hasbro for its leadership in managing and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Hasbro received the Excellence in Greenhouse Gas Management – Goal Setting Certificate, which recognizes organizations that publicly report and verify corporate GHG inventories and set aggressive GHG emissions reduction goals. Last September, the company established a goal to reduce GHG emissions by 20 percent by 2020 from a 2012 base year. This represents the company’s third public GHG reduction goal.

Recently, the toy manufacturer was also awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S Green Building Council for the its renovated facility in Providence, R.I., which has a number of green building features including sustainable carpet and reused material from local sources.

Nickelodeon to Debut Kid’s Choice Sports 2014 Awards

March17.KidsChoiceNickelodeon will debut its newest live award show, Kids’ Choice Sports 2014, hosted by Michael Strahan this July. The show will take place at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles and will honor athletes, teams, and sports moments from the year. The event will also feature a slime-filled sports stunt performed by a star athlete and a halftime live musical performance.

There will also be a Kids’ Choice Sports council consisting of athletes and other influencers in the sporting world. They will provide information during the awards show, give feedback on categories, and consult on the nominee process. Members of the council include Michael Phelps, Misty May-Treanor, and Baron Davis.

WIT Honors Outstanding Business Leaders with 10th Annual Wonder Women in Toys, Licensing & Entertainment Awards

At a February 18 dinner attended by more than 400 executives, Women in Toys (WIT) celebrated 10 visionary women business leaders with the 2014 Wonder Women in Toys, Licensing & Entertainment Awards. The award recipients are: Kiyomi Haverly of Mattel, Global Brands; Naz Cuevas of Rovio Entertainment Inc. and Donna Tobin of Hasbro Inc.; Rita Raiffe, design director at Gund; Stefanie Barone of M.Z. Berger & Co.; Susie Lecker of Fisher Price; Michele Litzky of Litzky Public Relations; Joan Packard Luks of The Seranata Group; Christina Jansa of Target; and Debra Sterling of GoldieBlox.

With support from major sponsors including Nickelodeon and Bandai, WIT also granted six scholarships to future toy industry leaders at toy design programs in universities worldwide.

The Year’s Most Outstanding Toys and Games Honored at TOTY Awards

Rainbow LoomOn February 15, the eve of American International Toy Fair, hundreds of toy executives and industry guests gathered at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City for the 14th Annual Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards and Toy Industry Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Rainbow Loom, from Choon’s Design LLC, won Toy of the Year as well as prizes in three additional categories, while GoldieBlox and the Spinning Machine, from GoldieBlox Inc., took home the People’s Choice award by pulling in the most online votes from consumers.

The event also featured five inductions into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame: Jill Barad, former chairman and CEO, Mattel; Horst Brandstätter, president and owner, Playmobil/geobra Brandstätter GmbH & Co. Ashley Mady Elected New President of Women in Toys

Feb10.AshleyHeadshotThe Woman in Toys Board of Trustees has unanimously elected Ashley Mady as the organization’s new president, effective April 1. Mady is currently president and founder of Brandberry Inc. In addition, she has been an active board member of the South Florida Chapter Chair, co-chair of the Wonder Woman in Toys, Licensing & Entertainment Awards Dinner for several years, and chairs the Web and Social Media Committees.

The announcement coincides with the 10th Annual Wonder Women in Toys, Licensing & Entertainment Awards. Joan Packard Luks, president of Woman in Toys since August 2010, will receive the 2014 Presidents Award. Mady is Luk’s successor as president of the organization.
