After two days of intense strategy and play, students Noah Kalus from New Paltz, N.Y., and Zach Ansell from Los Angeles defeated more than 55 teams to take home the coveted North American School Scrabble Championship trophy, the title, and the $10,000 grand prize at the 13th annual North American School Scrabble Championship. The tournament gathered the top Scrabble players from the U.S. and Canada in grades 4 through 8 at the Hasbro headquarters in Pawtucket, R.I.
More than 20 words were played during the final game, including DODO, TORA, EEK, LOUIE, AJIS, and KA. Living on opposite coasts, Kalus and Ansell met through their current coach, Cornelia Guest, and played Scrabble online together before teaming up in person for the first time at the 2014 School Scrabble Championship.
Participating sponsors of the North American School Scrabble Championship include Electronic Arts Inc., Merriam-Webster, and Intel, which also provided a Lenovo Horizon 2s portable all-in-one device, powered by Intel, to the championship winners.
