DreamWorks, Universal Announce Trolls Sequel

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures announced that a Trolls sequel is in the works and will hit theaters on April 10, 2020. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake will reprise their roles as the leading duo, eternal optimist Poppy and curmudgeon Branch, respectively, in the animated musical-comedy.

Trolls is based on the classic doll line and brought in $339.5 million in the box office since its November debut. Hasbro is the master toy licensee for the property and launched a line of figures, plush, play sets, and more for the original movie.

Lego to Produce Women of NASA Fan-Designed Set

Lego revealed its next fan-design set, Woman of NASA, which celebrates women who had key roles in the U.S. space program. The set met the 10,000 supporters mark in the Lego Ideas competition, and was approved by the Lego board. Read more...

Target Commits More Than $7 Billion to Adapt to Guest Preferences

Target's CEO Brian Cornell, COO John Mulligan and CFO Cathy Smith announced that the company is investing more than $7 billion in capital over the next three years, and approximately $1 billion in annual operating profits beginning in 2017, to grow sales faster, gain market share, adapt to guests’ rapidly changing preferences. Hasbro's Play-Doh Products to Be Manufactured by Cartamundi in the U.S.

Hasbro Inc. and Cartamundi have entered an agreement for Cartamundi to start manufacturing certain Play-Doh products in its East Longmeadow, Mass. factory for distribution in North America. Read more…

Legacy Re-Launches Crayola Color Blaster

Legacy Games re-launched Crayola Color Blaster, the company's first augmented reality game.

Legacy is releasing a new storyline content pack for the app, called Paint My Dragon, that includes fairies, tree monsters, ogres, and dragons. Also newly available is an arcade mode for players who prefer faster action. Read more…

ThinkFun Launches Kickstarter Campaign

ThinkFun launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring limited-edition versions of its new game, Roller Coaster Challenge, to campaign backers. The game combines roller coaster building and logic puzzle concepts, and teaches children the basics of structural design. Read more…

Roblox Hits Milestone 1.7 Million Independent Creators

Roblox, a social platform with more than 48 million monthly active players and 22 million online games, reached 1.7 million game creators. The number marks an increase of more than two times the amount of game creators on the platform from this time last year. Read more...

Toys: By the Numbers

The NPD Group looks at the biggest growth drivers of 2016, and touches on what the new year will bring.

Crossing the $20 billion threshold, the U.S. toy industry grew 5 percent to $20.4 billion in 2016, according to retail sales data* from global information company The NPD Group. Unit sales also grew 5 percent to $2 billion, and average retail price remained flat at $10.14. The industry was 16 percent larger in 2016 than 2013, which calculates to a compounded annual growth rate of 5 percent. Read more…

Rovio Returns to Profitable Growth

Rovio Entertainment returned to profitable growth in 2016, which saw a record performance in the company’s Games division and the blockbuster release of The Angry Birds Movie. Gross revenue of Rovio grew by 34 percent to $200.29 million (converted from 190.3 mEUR). Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) improved to $18.42 million (converted from 17.5 mEUR), which was negative $22.21 in 2015 (converted from -21.1 mEUR). Read more…

Target Reports Q4 and Full-Year 2016 Earnings

Target reported its fourth quarter and full-year 2016 results. Highlights include a GAAP earnings per share (EPS) from continuing operations of $1.46 in the fourth quarter and $4.58 for full-year 2016, compared to $2.31 and $5.25 in 2015, respectively. Read more…
