Rubie's Costume Co. to Launch Wonder Woman Costume Collection

Rubie's Costume Co. will produce officially licensed costumes, accessories, and masks inspired by Wonder Woman, which hit theaters on June 2.
Available in child and adult sizes, the collection features the film's main characters: Wonder Woman, Queen Hippolyta, Super-Villain Ares, and fighter pilot Steve Trevor. Rubie's collection closely replicates the ensembles portrayed on the big screen. Read more…

Ruling for Drone Registration Requirement Reversed

A U.S. appeals court reversed a ruling that requires owners of recreational drones to register aircrafts that weigh more than 0.5 pounds with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), according to The Toy Association.
With the reversal, users of toy drones no longer have to register their aircrafts with the FAA, and manufacturers of toy drones no longer need to tell purchasers that FAA registration is required with the purchase of their drone. Read more…

Playmates Toys Launches New Limited Exclusive Ben 10 Line

The Ben 10 toy line from Playmates Toys is now available as a limited exclusive at Toys “R” Us stores nationwide and online at  The full collection will be available at all other major retailers in August.
The line is inspired by Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 animated series, which premiered in the U.S. in April. The collection of toys includes action figures, vehicles, play sets, and role-play items.
The Playmates Toys collection includes the Basic Action Figure assortment, which features a variety of 5-inch, articulated figures including Ben Tennyson, the 10 different heroic aliens that he transforms into, villains from the first season, and more; the Rustbucket Vehicle and Playset, which transforms into a three-level play set that is more than 2 feet tall; and a Basic and Deluxe Omnitrix and Transform-N-Battle gauntlets and masks.

Hasbro, Harmonix Unveil New Details For DropMix

Hasbro Inc. and Harmonix Music Systems Inc. revealed 10 new songs and a new game mode for its upcoming music mixing game DropMix. First announced in March, the game features multiple game modes, including Clash Mode and Party Mode, and allows players to create mixes of songs by playing cards on a game board connected to an app.
Unlike Clash Mode, which pits two teams against each other as they battle to master the mix, players in Party Mode work together to fulfill crowd requests coming from the DropMix app. Playing together, friends will create a stream of music mixes. Read more...

Circuit Scribe Introduces DIY Electronic Kits

Circuit Scribe launched a Kickstarter campaign for do-it-yourself (DIY) electronic kits.
Creators can draw anything with a non-toxic, highly-conductive silver and water based ink with the Circuit Scribe's Conductive Silver Ink Pen, letting kids draw instantly-functioning circuits by hand. Backers of Circuit Scribe's first Kickstarter campaign received this pen, which is used for education, prototyping, and electronic art. The campaigned raised $675,000 from more than 12,000 backers, more than its original goal of $85,000. Kids can use this pen for the new DIY kits.
One of the kits available in the company's current campaign is The Drone Kit, in which parents can work with their kids to create a four-propeller drone using cardboard and the conductive pen. This DIY drone kit will include perforated sections that ensure symmetrical shapes, which can be configured and reconfigured in multiple variations to change the drone's size.

Build-A-Bear Workshop Adds Pop-Up Shop Experiences at Select Movie Theaters, Family Resorts

This summer, Build-A-Bear Workshop will offer new experiences for fans at select AMC Theatres, Carnival Cruise Line ships, Gaylord Hotels, and Beaches Resorts.
Build-A-Bear Workshop seasonal pop-up shops opened in March at select AMC Theatres locations in Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, and 10 additional shops opened this month in Texas, Kansas, and Missouri. Kids can make movie-inspired plush and customize it with an assortment of clothing, accessories, scents, and sounds. Pre-stuffed plush are also available. Read more…

IBM Watson, Sesame Workshop Team Up for Learning Platform

Georgia’s Gwinnett County Public Schools completed IBM and Sesame Workshop's initial pilot of the companies' first cognitive vocabulary learning app, built on the IBM and Sesame intelligent play and learning platform.
The new platform, powered by IBM Cloud, enables an ecosystem of software developers, researchers, educational toy companies, and educators to tap IBM Watson cognitive capabilities and Sesame Workshop’s early childhood expertise to build engaging experiences to help advance kid’s education and learning. The cognitive vocabulary app is one of the first of additional planned cognitive apps, games, and educational toys that will be built over time on this new platform, as a result of the two companies’ collaboration that began last year. Panel Finds Parents Need to Improve Play for Children

A panel of parenting experts and educators convened by The Genius of Play at The Children’s Museum of Manhattan found parents don’t truly understand the value that comes with play, according to The Toy Association. The panel’s findings are included in the report “The State of Play in America,” A Special Report by The Genius of Play.
The report includes guidance on the issues of concern to today’s parents and educators, including the role of technology in kids’ lives, safety concerns that could limit their independence, and the importance of recess or play breaks in aiding learning. The panel concluded that parents forget to carve out time for play and may wrongly dismiss it as “empty time.” Read more…

Deadline Set for Spielwarenmesse's World of Toys Pavilion in Hong Kong

Registration for the World of Toys Pavilion at Spielwarenmesse eG’s Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair ends on Sept. 30. The next edition of the show will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, and is scheduled to run from January 8 to 11.
At last year's Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, 31 companies (up from 27 in 2016) from 14 countries (13 in the year prior) appeared at the World of Toys Pavilion.
The range of services offered includes a complete exhibition stand with basic furnishings, a selection of service providers with recommendations, announcements, and publicity in the fair organizer’s publications, and marketing measures and promotions. Shopkins Pop-Up Café to Open in NYC

Moose Toys will open a limited-time Shopkins Macaron Café. Reservations for the café opened at 8 p.m. on June 1, and were completely booked in one minute. The waiting list includes more than 4,000 families.
The café is set to open in Tribeca from June 17 to 19 and is meant to celebrate the launch of Shopkins Season 8: World Vacation. The first wave of Shopkins: World Vacation will introduce Shopkins and Shoppies characters from France, Italy, Germany, and the UK.

Odyssey Toys Partners with Petra for Product Distribution

Odyssey Toys signed a deal with Petra this month to distribute its complete line of consumer electronics toys, such as drones and educational augmented reality games. Petra will work to increase distribution at online retailers and independent brick and mortar stores around the U.S. Read more…

Jazwares Founder Receives Owler 2017 Top Rated CEO Award

Jazwares' founder Judd Zebersky was presented the Owler 2017 Top Rated CEO Award. Owler, a community-based platform used for business insights by business professionals, recognizes the top CEOs from its business insights platform.
After he worked as an attorney, Zebersky started a consumer products company to make toys. He has been in the industry for 20 years and has contributed to thousands of products.
Owler Awards are distributed based on Owler Community rankings. It recognizes the top 1,000 CEOS from 167,000 across 50 cities and 20 industries worldwide.

Brain Miller to Receive ASTRA Top Honor

Brian Miller of the Geppetto’s A Child’s Fantasy toy stores in San Diego, California, will be honored at Marketplace & Academy with ASTRA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
Miller is a 25-year veteran in the toy industry and owns nine Geppetto’s locations. He started his toy career about the same time ASTRA was founded, and served as a board member and volunteer leader during the beginning of ASTRA. He also helped shape many ASTRA programs still in place today.
Miller will receive the award from ASTRA during its annual Awards Breakfast and Business meeting from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on June 26 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.

Mike Bettiga Joins Fun2Play Toys

Mike Bettiga joins Fun2Play Toys as the company's COO/CFO to help build the brand and boost sales. He will provide the company guidance as it works to cultivate its branding and position within the consumer market. Bettiga will also help ensure that sales meet and exceed current goals.
Bettiga joins the company with 38 years of corporate retail experience, most recently as former CEO/COO at national retail chain Shopko. During his previous work with Shopko, Bettiga pioneered several businesses within the company.
