Mattel has appointed a new member to its Board of Directors as of yesterday, March 29. Professor Noreena Hertz has experience as an academic, an author, and a global economist that she will bring to her new role at Mattel, serving on the Board of Directors’ Governance and Social Responsibility Committee. 

“Noreena is a highly influential economist and a global thought leader on ESG,” says Ynon Kreiz, Chairman and CEO of Mattel. “We look forward to the benefit of her expert insights and perspectives as we continue to execute our strategy to grow Mattel’s IP-driven toy business and expand our entertainment offering, operate as a responsible corporate citizen, and create long-term shareholder value.”

Professor Hertz brings with her a history of experience in economics in various spheres. Her most recent book, The Lonely Century: A Call to Reconnect, examines loneliness in the 21st century. Herz’s other books include Generation K, an analysis of American and British teenagers; Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World, which assists readers in dealing with the large amount of questionable data available; IOU: The Debt Threat, a look at debt in developing countries; and The Silent Takeover, which scrutinizes big business and corporate behavior across the world. 

Hertz also has previous experience advising companies and governments in many different areas, including strategy, policy decisions, mergers, and more. She serves as a board member for Warner Music Group Corp. on the Audit Committee and the Nominating and Governance Committee, as well as the board of Workhuman on the Audit Committee and the Compensation Committee. In academia, she’s held a number of positions and has produced research centered on artificial intelligence, decision-making, risk assessment, globalization, and other topics.
