Total video game sales for August 2016 is $573.4 million, up from $568.6 million last year, according to The NPD Group. While video games hardware sales decreased 6 percent from $190.3 million last year to $178.1 million this year, video games software grew 8 percent from $253.2 million last year to $273.7 million this year, PC games software grew 18 percent from $12 million last year to $14.2 million this year.
The top 10 games from August 2016 ranked on dollar sales are: Madden NFL 17, No Man’s Sky, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Grand Theft Auto V, Overwatch, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Rix: Siege, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Minecraft, and Destiny: The Taken King.
“The release of strong new titles such as Madden NFL 17, No Man’s Sky, andDeus Ex: Mankind Divided bolstered console software dollar sales by 8 percent and this had helped to offset losses in spending elsewhere. Although there was a strong launch for the Xbox One S and a second consecutive month in spending growth for 3DS, it was not enough to stimulate dollar growth in hardware,” says NPD’s Video Game Industry Analyst Sam Naji.
