NPD Reports April 2017 Video Game Sales

npd-group copyTotal industry spending for video game hardware, software, and accessories from Apr. 2 to 29, 2017 grew 10 percent to $636 million compared to last year, according to analysis from The NPD Group.

Video games hardware sales compared to the same period last year increased 37 percent from $142 million last year to $195 million this year; video games software increased 6 percent from $287 million last year to $304 million this year; and video games accessories increased 4 percent from $121 million last year to $126 million this year.

“Total video game spending, which includes hardware, software and accessories, grew 10 percent versus year ago to $636 million, the first time the industry has experienced two months of consecutive growth since November 2015,” says Mat Piscatella, NPD’s video game industry analyst.

The top 10 games based on dollar sales in April across all platforms are Mario Kart 8, Persona 5, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, MLB 17: The Show, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands, Grand Theft Auto V, Mass Effect: Andromeda, NBA 2K17, Overwatch, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
