DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., has entered into an agreement to acquire Classic Media, owner of an extensive portfolio featuring many of the best-known and most-enduring franchises in family entertainment, for $155 million in cash from Boomerang Media Holdings I LLC, a portfolio company of Chicago-based private equity firm GTCR.
With well-established titles such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Where’s Waldo?, Lassie, The Lone Ranger, George of the Jungle, and Rocky & Bullwinkle, Classic Media’s properties have been a fixture in mainstream entertainment for decades.
Classic Media has approximately 80 employees and is headquartered in New York City, with offices in the UK and a division, Big Idea Entertainment, in Nashville, Tenn.
For the 12 months ending February 29, Classic Media earned net revenue of $82.2 million and operating profit of $19.2 million.
The acquisition of Classic Media will be financed through a combination of cash and borrowings under DreamWorks Animation’s revolving credit facility. The purchase price of $155 million includes amounts required to retire indebtedness.
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. DreamWorks Animation expects that the transaction will be completed during the quarter ending September 30.

VeggieTales is celebrating 20 years of songs by releasing a “best of the best” DVD early next year, If I Sang a Silly Song. The DVD, by Big Idea Entertainment, will be available through digital download on January 24 and in Christian and general market stores on February 7.
VeggieTales: If I Sang a Silly Song will include fan-voted favorite songs from the past couple of decades, including “The Hairbrush Song,” “Pants,” and “Monkey,” among others. The DVD also features a new silly song, voted on by fans and chosen by Larry the Cucumber. The release contains more than 60 minutes of music and family-friendly content. Viewers can sing along karaoke-style and be the star with video background and tracks.
Big Idea Entertainment will be releasing a new VeggieTales DVD title in time for the holidays. VeggieTales: The Little Drummer Boy follows Junior Asparagus as The Little Drummer Boy, a lonely child who happens to stumble upon the birth of Jesus and discovers the true meaning of Christmas.
The DVD will feature multi-Grammy and Dove Award-winning artists Bebe and Cece Winans, singing their rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy,” as well as original songs such as “Can’t Live Without Ewe” and the all-new silly song “The 8 Polish Foods of Christmas.”
Consumers will now be able to decorate their walls with VeggieTales characters and themes. Wacky Wallscapes has signed an exclusive licensing deal with Big Idea Entertainment to create wall coverings, wallpaper, and murals with full-sized Veggie Tales characters, including Larry the Cucumber, Bob the Tomato, Junior Asparagus, and Pa Grape. The deal also includes a complete collection of themed background scenes. Wacky Wallscapes floor-to-ceiling murals can also be customized to fit into any space. The products will be available early this fall.
Veggie Tales will expand its presence in consumer products by forming new licensing partnerships with companies, including Box Creations, Primary Leisure Global, and Brewster Home Fashions.
Build Your Imagination with Bob and Larry is a tabletop cardboard play set from Box Creations that is scheduled to hit stores this fall. Primary Leisure Global is bringing a new toy to the States—GigglePOD, which allows children to interact in a small video booth while parents are engaged through an external monitor. The Veggie Tales GigglePOD will launch this summer.
Brewster Home Fashions also partnered with the successful series to create Veggie Tales Lessons Really Stick, a Veggie Tales-themed assortment of wall stickers and appliques.
With the royal wedding still on some people’s minds, Big Idea Entertainment is releasing Veggie Tales: Princess and the Pop Star to celebrate kids being themselves in a royal way.
The DVD tells the story of Princess Poppyseed who longs to know what it would be like to be her favorite pop star, Vanna Banana. A chance meeting between the two at a playground leads to the pair switching lives since they look so much alike.
They learn after the switch that the life they have is the one best suited for them, promoting self love. The DVD features a new song by Francesca Battistelli, winner of a Dove Award by the Gospel Music Association . Big Idea Entertainment is teaming up with Chick-fil-A to offer consumers special tie-ins with the title as well.
