The Hub Network to Become Discovery Family Channel on October 13

HasbroStudios.logoThe Hub Network will become the Discovery Family Channel effective October 13. While the network will broaden its programming focus to serve families in primetime, it will continue to showcase Hasbro Studios children’s content in daytime.

During the daytime, the channel will offer a line-up of brand new Hasbro Studios’ series, as well as such library programming as My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, and Transformers Rescue Bots.

Discovery Family Channel will continue as a joint venture of Discovery Communications and Hasbro, with Discovery Communications taking a 60 percent ownership position in the new channel and Hasbro’s stake decreasing to 40 percent. Discovery Communications, Fuzzy Frog Launch Augmented Reality Game

March19.SpiderAppDiscovery Communications, in partnership with app developer Fuzzy Frog, has created Real Scary Spiders, a game that allows users to interact with a pet spider through an augmented reality experience on an app. Players can collect, nurture, and raise spiders, and will eventually unlock new breeds and learn interesting facts through gameplay.

Users can transport their spiders onto a target image in the real world, such as the cover of a magazine or wall, which uses the app’s augmented reality feature. In addition, players can purchase the Animal Planet Web Blasting Tarantula exclusively at Toys “R” Us stores nationwide to activate an additional interconnected experience within the app.

The Animal Planet Real Scary Spiders app is available for free across all iOS and Android digital devices.

Discovery Kids Launches Kid’s Meal Promotion at Sonic

Sonic Drive-In restaurants will distribute a new line of toys in its Wacky Pack Kid’s Meals as part of a partnership with Discovery Communications Inc. Each kid’s meal will include one of five toys and the opportunity for kids to play with any of the three online games offered on DiscoverKids.com.

The toys are targeted toward kids ages 4 to 12 to encourage them to play outside, explore, and use their imaginations. The assortment in the line includes the Lightning Bug Lantern, Bug-Nocs, Venus Fly Trap, Ladybug Pack, and Spider Pack. The promotion will run through March 22.

Discovery Kids and Walgreens Partner for Line of Outdoor Toys

discoveryDiscovery Communications Inc. will launch Discovery Kids Outdoor Adventure Toys exclusively at Walgreens for its Discovery Kids brand. The new toy line is available this summer at Walgreens stores nationwide.

The Outdoor Adventure line includes metal detectors, detective periscopes, a field tools kit featuring six options, a 4-in-1 magnifiers set to explore various surfaces, bug playgrounds, and binoculars. Each toy also incorporates a special QR code that links to exclusive Discovery Kids content and activities on DiscoveryKids.com. This new line of toys is the latest addition to the Discovery Kids and Walgreens merchandise program that launched last holiday season.

Discovery Communications Reteams with Burger King for BK Kids Meal Promotion

Following last year’s debut partnership with the Burger King brand, Discovery Communications is teaming up with the restaurant chain again. The new line of premiums, featuring space-themed Discovery Kids items in every BK Kids Meal sold at participating restaurant locations across the U.S. and Canada.

Now customers can receive one of six space-themed Discovery Kids premiums crafted to promote learning and exploration, including a Red Planet Reveal Mars Rover, Orion Zero-G Astronaut, and Launch Center Rocket Discs. Each toy comes with a collectible card that unlocks activities and provides information about space exploration. This line of products from the Discovery Kids brand encourages kids to use their imaginations to actively explore the world around them and discover their inner space explorer.

Discovery Communications and Wendy’s Introduce Animal Planet Augmented Reality Games to Kids’ Meals

Discovery Communications and Wendy’s partnered to bring an augmented reality game to Wendy’s Kids’ Meals. On October 8, Wendy’s began distributing Animal Planet-themed Kids’ Meal premiums, featuring an augmented reality overlay, with the purchase of a Kids’ Meal.

The premiums feature one of five animals: a dog, cat, parakeet, chameleon, or fish. From a dog catching a disc to a cat purring, each toy will showcase a trait of the specific animal. The augmented reality experience features the same pets received in the Kids’ Meal and allows kids to play games from a desktop, as well as a mobile device through iTunes and Google Play. Fun and educational, each game of virtual play is differentiated among the five pets and incorporates each animal’s natural play patterns.

In addition to these Animal Planet premiums, participating Wendy’s will distribute coupons for a special offer on Animal Planet products, available at Toys “R” Us. Wendy’s will support the Animal Planet Kids’ Meal promotion with extensive in-restaurant marketing in more than 6,000 Wendy’s locations nationwide, which will include signage, branded Kids’ Meal bags, and window clings, as well as a presence on Wendys.com.

The deal was brokered on behalf of Animal Planet by its North American licensing agent, The Joester Loria Group.

Clue Named as Latest The Hub Series

Clue has been announced as the latest series to join a lineup of shows, which will be broadcast on the new network The Hub, to launch on October 10 (10-10-10). Clue, produced by Hasbro Studios, will feature a youthful, ensemble cast (to be announced) that work together to uncover clues and unravel mysteries.

Other shows that will be broadcast on The Hub include Dan Vs., Family Game Night, G.I. Joe Renegades, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Pictureka!, Pound Puppies, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, The Adventures of Chuck and Friends, and Transformers Prime.

The Hub is a joint venture between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, Inc. and is expected to be available in 60 million U.S. households at launch.

Disguise Signs Deal to Manufacture Hasbro-Branded Costumes

Disguise, the Halloween costume division of JAKKS Pacific, Inc., has signed a multi-year agreement with Hasbro to produce Halloween costumes and accessories based on most Hasbro brands. The three-year deal grants Disguise expanded and exclusive rights to manufacture and distribute Hasbro-branded Halloween costumes and accessories in the U.S. and Canada, beginning this Halloween season.

Costumes will include those based on Transformers 3, to be released summer 2011, and the television shows G.I. Joe and My Little Pony, which will air this fall on Hasbro and Discovery Communications‘ joint-venture cable network, The Hub.

Discovery Communications to Develop TLC and Animal Planet Baby Lines

Discovery Communications, Inc. (DCI), and Big Tent Entertainment (BTE) have announced the brand formation of TLC Baby. According to Discovery, TLC is the top cable destination for mothers aged 18 to 49 with children under 2 years old, airing shows such as A Baby Story and Bringing Home Baby. The newly formed brand extension hopes to capitalize and expand on this existing audience.

The TLC Baby brand will span markets including learning and development, health and safety, bath, feeding, electronics, furniture, room décor, bedding/blankets, layette, and apparel. Big Tent was recently named sole licensing agent of record for all TLC-branded content and currently represents Discovery Kids. [Read more...]

The Hub Network Announces New Original Programming

The Hub, a joint venture between Discovery Communications and Hasbro, Inc., has announced the addition of two new Hub Original Series programs to the network.

Live-action program Pictureka! and animated series The Adventures of Chuck and Friends will appear on the network when it launches October 10. The programs join The Hub’s previously announced series, which will offer programming choices across the network’s planned programming blocks of preschool (ages 2-5, 9 AM-1 PM), kids afternoon/kids prime (ages 6-12, 1-6 PM), family prime access (6-7 PM), and family prime (7-11 PM).

Pictureka! is adapted from the family board game and will feature contestants and their families as they take on the challenge of finding specific objects disguised in elaborate drawings. The show is produced by Hasbro Studios in conjunction with Ellman Entertainment.
