Warner Bros. Consumer Products Brings Godzilla-Sized List of Licensees to Toy Fair

WB Consumer ProductsWarner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) enters this year’s American International Toy Fair with an extensive lineup of global licensees in support of its entertainment properties, milestone anniversaries, and upcoming theatrical releases.

Bandai America Inc. and Jakks Pacific Inc. will each support Godzilla, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, with new toy lines. Jakks’ line of Godzilla products will include an Ultimate Large Scale Godzilla Figure with 12 points of articulation and a length of over 43 inches, making it one of the largest toys in Godzilla history. Other worldwide partners include Rubie’s Costume Co., NECA, and Sideshow Collectibles.

WBCP’s toy partners will also release toys and collectibles based on The Hobbit Trilogy. The Bridge Direct and Vivid Group will support the film series with new figures. Additional partners include Eaglemoss, Funko, Kosmos, and Ravensburger.

The Wizard of Oz will celebrate its 75th anniversary with Mattel‘s new line of dolls for The Wizard of Oz Barbie collection. Enesco, Tonner Doll, and Madame Alexander will each offer collectible figures. Warner Bros. will also continue its There’s No Place Like Home campaign in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Gone with the Wind will also mark its 75th anniversary with new collectible figures from Madame Alexander and Tonner Doll. Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair Returns in January 2014

HKTDCThe HKTDC Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair will return next year from January 6 to 9 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. The fair allows the industry to get a head start on strategies planning for the year ahead.

Last year’s show drew more than 39,000 buyers from 126 countries and regions. This year marks the 40th edition, and more than 1,900 exhibitors are expected to bring their latest collections on display, ready to meet their potential business partners. The fair will include group pavilions such as Chinese mainland, Indonesia, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, and World of Toys Pavilion in the coming edition, further testifying to its internationality.

The fair highlight Brand Name Gallery is geared towards the needs of buyers seeking top-notch branded toys from quality names. Renowned brands include B, Beleduc, B Kids, CMC, Color Rich, Daniel & Co, Dragon, Ein-O-Science, Enesco, Hape, Intex, Moulin Roty, Plan Toys, Welly, Viking Toys, and VTech.

Gund, TCG, and Ganz Nab Worldwide Licensing Rights to Grumpy Cat Toys

Grumpy Cat, the famously pessimistic, yet hilarious Internet sensation with over 1 million Facebook fans, has signed new deals for branded toys.

Gund, a division of Enesco LLC in the U.S., has acquired worldwide licensing rights to manufacture and distribute Grumpy Cat plush. Gund’s Grumpy Cat was launched in July and is currently being sold to all upstairs channels and specialty markets. The plush recreates the title feline’s famous frowning face. Delivery to stores will begin November 1.

Meanwhile, TCG and Ganz of Canada were also granted worldwide licensing rights to manufacture, distribute, and market a line of consumer products for Grumpy Cat and her brother Pokey. TCG will create puzzles and novelty plush toys for the mass market, and Ganz will produce gift items and plush. TCG and Ganz products are expected to hit retail shelves in December.

Voting Opens for 2014 Toy Industry Hall of Fame Inductees

HallofFame2014logoThe Toy Industry Association (TIA) has opened its annual ballot to determine the next inductees into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame. The voting period will extend to September 13. This year’s candidates were chosen from a slate of 24 highly-qualified nominees submitted for consideration by members of the Hall of Fame (HOF) Committee. All of the nominees left notable marks on the North American toy industry.

Living candidates for induction into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame included:

  •     Jill Barad, former CEO, Mattel
  •     Horst Brandstätter, president and sole owner, PLAYMOBIL/geobra Brandstätter GmbH & Co. KG
  •     Thomas Chan, chairman and CEO, Playmates Toys Inc.
  •     Joel Glickman, founder, K’NEX Brands
  •     Bruce Raiffe, president, Gund, division of Enesco, LLC

Candidates for posthumous induction into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame included:

Responses are due by September 13. Designated points of contact at TIA member companies, former Hall of Fame inductees, and recent TIA Board members are invited to rank their choices in the living and posthumous categories.

The inductees will be honored during the Toy of the Year (TOTY) awards ceremony on February 15 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, which officially launches Toy Fair Week in New York City.

Uglydoll Collaborates with Universal Monsters for New Plush

Pretty Ugly, the official licensors of the Uglydoll brand, has partnered with Universal Partnerships and Licensing to develop a new series of Uglydoll plush dolls based on the Universal Monsters. The Universal Monsters series of dolls will make its retail debut Halloween this year.

Gund, a division of Enesco, will offer these co-branded characters, including Wedgehead as Frankenstein, Ice-Bat as Dracula, Ox as Wolfman, Tray as Bride of Frankenstein, Big Toe as Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Babo as Mummy.

The first series of plush dolls will launch this fall and will be available at retailers nationwide. Gund previewed these collaborative plush characters at the ASTRA show and will show them at the upcoming summer Gift Shows.

Uglydoll Teams up with DC Comics for Superhero Toys and Accessories

Pretty Ugly, LLC and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment, announced that they have entered into a co-branded 1209collaboration with DC Comics Super Heroes and Uglydoll characters. Gund, a division of Enesco, will produce a diverse range of colorful and collectible superhero plush based on the DC Comics and Uglydoll character universes. The initial release this fall will be a trio that includes two versions of Ice-Bat as Batman and Babo as Superman.

The plush characters will be offered at retail and will be available through Diamond Comics and a broad range of retailers. Funko is also set to offer a collection of vinyl figures based on the DC Comics and Uglydoll plush collaboration during the holiday season this year. Additional categories of merchandise and collaborative characters will be announced in the coming months.

Gund will be previewing their new collaborative plush merchandise at the summer Gift Shows and ASTRA show in June. Diamond Comics will be exhibiting at San Diego Comic-Con in July and in their infamous Previews catalog. Funko and others will launch merchandise in time for the holiday season.

Gund Signs Licensing Deal for Uglydoll Plush

Gund has signed a licensing deal with Pretty Ugly, LLC, to make Uglydoll-branded plush characters. Gund, the plush division of Enesco, LLC, will begin selling and shipping Uglydoll plush products to current and new retail customers worldwide this summer, while Pretty Ugly, LLC, will focus its efforts on expanding licensing programs across multiple product categories for the Uglydoll brand.

The Uglydoll line was launched in January 2001. Created by artists David Horvath and Sun-Min Kim, who started with a drawing of a playful orange character known as Wage, the line has grown into a line of characters, stories, and products for all ages.

Enesco, LLC is entering into a licensing agreement with Big Idea, Inc., to develop and distribute new products featuring VeggieTales characters and their faith-based messages. Enesco’s portfolio of brands includes its Gund plush division and its Gregg Gift division, one of the nation’s leading producers of faith-based gift products. VeggieTales products from Enesco are expected to be offered to retailers by midyear 2010 and be available in stores by the fall.
