Plush is not just about stuffed teddies anymore. At North American International Toy Fair, there were dozens of companies with plush on display—ranging from traditional bears, to robotic plush, to artistic plush. Creative plush designs are especially cool because they appeal to both kids and adults. The right plush piece can even add a unique design element to a room, and many of these types of plush characters are great gift ideas for expectant parents who are waiting to find out their little one’s gender, since they have a gender-neutral heirloom quality to them that makes them extra special.
This year, Moulin Roty is adding fairytale forest characters with a nostalgic touch to its pastel Mademoiselle Et Ribambelle world. The newest collection—which includes Owl, Otter, Mouse, and Rabbit—consists of dolls, rattles, squeakers, and loveys for babies and toddlers.
New dolls include the Mademoiselle Doll, a plush little lady with a bonnet and whimsical cat ears; the Rabbit Doll, a 13-inch plush with fancy pantaloons; the Musical Plush Owl, an 8-inch doll with a yellow dot cotton tutu lined with tulle, which plays music when its sequined tab is pulled; and the Musical Plush Otter, which has a square-patterned cotton waistcoat and dot jersey men’s tie, and like Owl, plays “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
New rattles include the soft, 7.5-inch Mouse Rattle; the Mouse with Ring, which offers visual stimulation with colorful balls and sound; and the Owl Ring Rattle, a soft toy with velvet, tulle, and fur plus two teething rings.
The squeakers are 8-inch grasping toys available in characters Mademoiselle and Otter. Each is a soft toy dressed in sequined jersey and wearing a pink bonnet.
Loveys are a twist on the traditional security blanket or favorite dolly. They measure 10 to 11 inches, and are available in characters Mademoiselle, Mouse, and Rabbit. Each comes with a Velcro strap.
Finally, the Owl Activity Doll measures 14 inches and has crinkle paper, a mirror, a ring rattle, and soft fabrics on its front and back. It also has a baby owl speaker tucked into its front pouch. This pink and white activity toy is intended to boost the motor skills and stimulate the senses of kids ages 1 and up.

French toy company Moulin Roty has cast a light on its Les Petit Merveilles line of Nighttime Shadow Puppets. Instead of reading from a storybook, parents and kids can use these puppet sets with themes of Castles, Paris, Circus, and Dinosaurs to create magical tales for sweet dreams. Magicforest, the exclusive U.S. distributor of Moulin Roty toys, will showcase the entire collection, plus the Nighttime Shadow Theatre, at its booth at the American International Toy Fair.
Different than hand puppets made by a flashlight and a camping tent wall, these artistic puppets entice storytelling and hand coordination, and serve as an outlet to express feelings. The puppets are made from black cardstock that is laser cut into various shapes. The Paris Shadows set features the Eiffel Tower, an airplane, the moon, and a sleepwalker. The nine-piece Castle Shadows includes a dragon, a fairy, royalty, and a witch. The Dinosaur Shadows is a pack of 10 puppets featuring a stegosaurus, a brachiosaurus, and more prehistoric shapes. The Nighttime Circus Shadow puppets include 11 different figures, including a lion, an elephant, and a strongman. The puppets are designed for kids ages 3 and up.
