Wonder Workshop has appointed Raghu Sethuraman as COO and Ned Ward as vice president of marketing. Sethuraman will lead global operations, finance, customer service, and reseller partner organizations. He brings more than 16 years of leadership experience to Wonder Workshop from fast growing global e-commerce, supply chain, manufacturing, finance, and customer service organizations including Amazon.
Sony Pictures Entertainment, Mattel, and Parkes+MacDonald/Image Nation have partnered on a live-action comedy based on the iconic Barbie doll. The film will go into production at the end of this year. In her live-action big screen debut, Barbie will be shown inhabiting many of the 150 roles she has played throughout the franchise’s more than 50-year history, including a mermaid, a movie star, and the president.
The project marks the second collaboration between Sony Pictures and Mattel, which are currently developing a film adaptation of Masters of the Universe, based on Mattel’s popular action figures. The live-action Barbie film will be written by Jenny Bicks, produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, and executive produced by Parkes+MacDonald’s president Marc Resteghini alongside Julia Pistor, who will executive produce for Mattel’s Playground Productions.
Honoring the 30th anniversary of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe franchise, Mattel and Chillingo, a leading independent games publisher along with mobile developer GlitchSoft, have launched a new He-Man game app. Available in the App Store, fans now have the chance to battle alongside He-Man throughout his kingdom of Eternia in a modern celebration of classic gameplay that will test player’s skill, speed, and agility. Debuting on the iOS platform, the game features side-scrolling playability with powerful “Tap and Slash” functionality through 27 action packed levels spread across seven realms of Eternia.
The star of the 1980s-era He-Man and the Masters of the Universe story, He-Man has been brought to life throughout the years in beloved Mattel action figures, animated television series, comic books, and a live action feature film. Mattel’s partnership with Chillingo, a division of Electronic Arts and publisher of such hit titles as Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Contre Jour, Feed Me Oil, and Catapult King, combines the world’s leading toy company with an established leader in the mobile gaming industry.
As part of the anniversary, Mattel has created a new Masters of the Universe He-Man Facebook page, allowing devotees to connect and engage online with each other and their favorite hero.
In celebration of the upcoming 30th anniversary of Masters of the Universe, Classic Media and Mattel are launching a consumer products program for the franchise. The Masters of the Universe Classics toy line, featuring updated sculpts of vintage Mattel toys, will continue throughout next year, exclusively on Mattycollector.com. The 2012 annual subscription will go on sale the week of San Diego Comic-Con, starting July 22.
The program will also include Halloween costumes and accessories from Disguise, launching first with Skeletor, He-Man, and She-Ra adult costumes, available this fall through a leading online e-tailer. Other new products include a 30th anniversary apparel line from Changes and a special 30th anniversary edition DVD box set from Mill Creek Entertainment (fall 2012). Publishing partners will be announced shortly.
