For the second quarter, Mattel Inc. reported flat worldwide net sales in constant currency, and worldwide net sales down 7 percent, reflecting the impact from changes in currency exchange rates.
For the first quarter, Mattel Inc. reported worldwide net sales up 5 percent in constant currency, as well as reported worldwide net sales down 2 percent, reflecting the impact from changes in currency exchange rates. On a regional basis, first quarter gross sales increased 9 percent in constant currency, and 8 percent as reported in the North American region, which consists of the U.S., Canada, and American Girl. For the International region, gross sales increased 2 percent in constant currency, and decreased 14 percent as reported.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), with DC Entertainment, has extended its alliance with Mattel Inc. with a new multi-year agreement granting Mattel rights to continue as master toy licensee for the DC Comics universe of characters. Under these terms, Mattel is granted unprecedented access to the DC Comics vault of characters, which includes more than a thousand DC Comics superheroes and super-villains, such as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and The Joker. The deal continues Mattel’s support of DC Comics across its entire portfolio of core brands, including Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Barbie, Mattel Games, and Fisher-Price.
In addition to existing characters and content, the extension includes Mattel’s rights to produce toys based on future DC Comics films, animation, and TV projects that are developed and produced during the term of the agreement. To commemorate its 60-year anniversary, Matchbox, from Mattel, is kicking off a three-month national campaign that will include the Matchbox Heroes Wanted Sweepstakes with a $60,000 college scholarship award and a national retail promotion for fans to purchase Matchbox die-cast vehicles for 60 cents for a limited time at participating retailers now through March 10.
The Matchbox Heroes Wanted Sweepstakes calls on parents to celebrate the heroic attributes of their children by submitting a picture and caption of their hero-in-training dressed as their favorite real-life icon. Submissions will be showcased on the Matchbox Heroes Wanted Facebook gallery and are automatically entered to win a $60,000 college scholarship. Parents with children between the ages of 3 and 10 can enter the contest now through May 13. Sixty prize pack giveaways will be awarded weekly consisting of a Matchbox-branded gift box, a personalized photo-frame thank you card, and four heroic Matchbox vehicles.
