Hasbro Is Bringing Down the House Rules for Monopoly

Monopoly.HouseRulesFrom March 25 to April 3, fans around the world weighed the pros and cons of their favorite Monopoly house rules on the Monopoly Facebook page. This past Friday, Hasbro announced the top five house rules, which will be featured in future Monopoly games. They are:

  • Free Parking, Fast Cash: All taxes and fees are collected in the middle of the game board, and if a player lands on Free Parking, they collect it.
  • Dash for the Cash: Players who land on Go! get to double their salary—400 Monopoly(M) Dollars instead of 200M Dollars.
  • Frozen Assets Rule: When in jail, a player cannot collect any rent money from other players.
  • See the Sights: Players must travel around the board one complete time before they can begin buying properties.
  • Lucky Roller: If a player rolls Snake Eyes—double ones—they collect 500M Dollars.

Fans will find the top five house rules in the Monopoly: House Rules edition game, available in select markets this fall. The chosen rules will also be included in the Monopoly game guide beginning next year.

Contest Lets Fans Decide on House Rules for Future Monopoly Games

In a recent survey conducted by Hasbro, 68 percent of Americans admit they’ve never read the official Monopoly rules in their entirety, and 49 percent said they have made up their own Monopoly rules! Knowing this, Hasbro is giving Monopoly fans around the world an opportunity to “break the rules” by inviting them to help select the top “house rules” to become a part of future Monopoly games.

Through April 3, the Monopoly Facebook page will host the Great Monopoly House Rules Debate, with Mr. Monopoly himself as moderator. Fans are encouraged to debate the pros and cons of 10 house rules that were selected as a result of crowd-sourcing fans globally on the Facebook page.

Produced by USAopoly, under license from Hasbro Inc. and in conjunction with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Monopoly: The Wizard of Oz 75th Anniversary Collector’s Edition features a game board that unfolds to reveal a spectacular 3-D pop-up center showcasing movie plot points.

COMMENTARY: USAopoly Gives Classic Games a Licensed Twist

You may love Monopoly, but it’s okay to admit that sometimes you get a little tired of playing the same game over and over again. Games become classics because they span generations, and they’re well-designed and challenging. In a way, they can become timeless. But you can only force your grandma to mortgage all of her properties and hand over all her piles of pastel-colored money so many times before enough is enough. Her little thimble token—and your interest and passion for the game—has been defeated.

USAopoly has solved this problem by taking our favorite classic games and slapping a license or five on them, making each edition more appealing and unique to the players. Properties include The Smurfs, The Wizard of Oz, My Little Pony, and many, many more, to appeal to all generations, collectors, and fans. The great thing about these licensed games is that they give your traditional family favorites a big twist—and turn it into a whole new game! So if you’re tiring of the same old games in your closet, these would be some great additions to your next family game night.

drwho_mn_3dbt_webI’m not one who’s all about sci-fi shows and aliens and such, but I have to admit that I find BBC‘s Doctor Who series highly addicting—and The Doctor has quite the cult following that will back me up on that. Now fans can travel through time and space with their favorite Doctor with USAopoly’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of Monopoly.  Two to six plays ages 8 and up can buy, sell, and trade iconic episodes, spaceships, and landmarks, spanning billions of years across the Doctor Who universe. The Poison Sky, A Good Man Goes to War, The Daleks, and the Arc of Infinity are all able to be purchased by time travelers. [Read more...]

New SeaWorld-Inspired Products Teach Conservation

Monopoly.SeaWorldHoliday gifts inspired by SeaWorld will debut this season. New toys such as Monopoly: SeaWorld Wildlife Conservation Edition, a version of the board game that rewards players who invest in the animals’ natural habitats, will feature the park’s iconic marine animals, including penguins and polar bears.

Changes to the original game include SeaWorld Cares and SeaWorld Rescue in place of Chance and Community cards, while the game’s houses and hotels are transformed into animal research and rescue facilities. Sea World Parks & Entertainment worked closely with partner USAopoly to create a conservation-focused game, instead of a real-estate focused one.

Other SeaWorld-inspired products include plush animals, which are part of Happy Plaid Accessories, a kid-friendly line featuring park-exclusive animal patterns. These and other items are all available at SeaWorld’s three parks and shamushop.com.

COMMENTARY: Nightmarish Christmas Gifts Delight Burton Fans This Season

While my folks are tuning into the Hallmark channel for the sappy Christmas movies that make them cry year after year, and my niece and nephew obsess over Buddy from Elf, I’m still stuck on a classic Christmas favorite that is often misappropriated by Halloween: The Nightmare Before Christmas. The movie isn’t called A Dream Before Halloween. For me, that’s enough reasoning to say it is, in fact—no matter how creepy—a Christmas movie.

Nightmare Before Christmas MonopolyUSAopoly will bring this cult classic into homes this holiday season in a whole new way with Monopoly: The Nightmare Before Christmas Collector’s Edition. Players can buy, sell, and trade iconic movie locations, such as Jack’s Tower, Oogie Boogie’s Casino, Sally’s Alley, Dr. Finkelstein’s Laboratory, Town Square Fountain, and (my favorite) Spiral Hill. This completely customized game features imagery of all the greatest characters from the film, with Jack and Sally front and center, as well as six collectible pewter tokens, including Jack’s Skull, Sally, the Mayor’s Hearse, Oogie Boogi, Zombie Duck, and Evil Teddy. Just like the classic, this game is designed for two to six players ages 8 and up and is sure to please all Nightmare fans. [Read more...]

USAopoly, Diamond Comics Release Monopoly: The Walking Dead Survival Edition

5.0.3Exclusively from Skybound, Robert Kirkman’s imprint at Image Comics, and Diamond Comic Distributor, Monopoly: The Walking Dead Survival Editiongame is now available to purchase in comic book specialty shops.  Based off The Walking Dead comic from Kirkman, the game put a post-apocalyptic spin on the traditional Monopoly, giving fans the opportunity to live out the comic by fighting for their own property, and avoiding zombies with each players turn.

Monopoly: The Walking Dead Survival Edition delivers a classic Monopoly game play.  Players fight for, and then must fortify the prime real estate and resources that will sustain their lives. The game takes over the characteristic of The Walking Dead as the properties all correspond with the series landmarks such as the prison cells, Greene Family farm house, Woodbury, and more locations, while game tokens resemble key items from the series such as Rick’s sheriff hat, bucket of body parts, the telephone, and the R.V.

Instead of using money to purchase property, players must trade in essential supplies, such as food, ammo, and fuel, to gain more territory on the board or to place a guard tower or wall instead of the standard houses and hotels, to secure their properties from invading zombies. This game features six collectible tokens and optional speed play.

Additional The Walking Dead merchandise, including comics, apparel, toys and, collectibles, can also be purchased at comic book stores or through Diamond’s Previews catalog.
