Disney released new images from Disney Infinity, its most ambitious gaming initiative ever, during the American International Toy Fair, held in New York City at the Jacob K. Javits Center from Sunday, February 10 through Wednesday, February 13. Disney Infinity is an all-new gaming platform that combines Disney’s most popular franchises with one of today’s hottest trends in toys: interactive figures that come to life in video games. Players can place real-world toy versions of their favorite Disney characters onto a device called the Infinity Base and transport them into the virtual game worlds of Monsters University, the Incredibles, and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as into a giant Toy Box where they can create their own Disney experiences.
At a pirate-themed preview event earlier this month, Disney Consumer Products unveiled a new toy line based on the upcoming fourth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, On Stranger Tides. The 3-D movie will release in theaters on May 20.
The On Stranger Tides toy assortment, debuting in stores beginning this March, will include figures and play sets with a special black light from Jakks Pacific. The black light accessory that comes with all four-inch figures, four-inch Legend Pack figures and accessories, and the Queen Anne’s Revenge play set unveils a secret reveal that turns the figures into zombies. Jakks will also introduce new strategy-based board games based on the movie this fall.
The Lego Group will introduce nine play sets based on the movie, including a buildable version of Queen Anne’s Revenge and the Whitecap Bay play set, in which Jack Sparrow and the other pirates encounter mermaids.
During a presentation on Thursday by Walt Disney Studios chairman Rich Ross, Disney unveiled its upcoming slate of movies.
Pixar will release a sequel to Monsters, Inc. in November 2012. Monsters, Inc. debuted in theaters in 2001, and has grossed over $525 million worldwide. Ross also announced that Pixar’s Brave has been scheduled for June 15, 2012.
Other upcoming movies include Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and The Muppets in 2011, and Prom in 2012.
