COMMENTARY: Be a Rock Star—Through Play!

From the ages of 9 to about—oh I don’t know—now, few things got me more excited than hearing a Spice Girls song. I remember the days of standing in front of my mirror with a hair brush belting out all of Britney Spears‘ greatest hits. Everyone—whether you have an extreme case of stage fright or, like myself, were a diva-beyond-compare since the age of 5—loves the fantasy of being a rock star. It takes a lot of guts and gall—and boy does it seem glamorous.

We all know from reading the news that not all roads to rock stardom are as shiny, bright, and full of great shoes as we all hope for them to be. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t still love the fantasy. With the upgrade of technology being incorporated into toys, kids’ fantasies of being a rock star are becoming truly, well, spectacular. Here are some great toys that will get kids—and kids at heart—up in front of that mirror belting into a hairbrush.

superstarThe Barbie Build ‘n Play Super Star Stage, from Mega Bloks, allows girls ages 5 and up to build their own two-story stage that features real lights and sounds that move to the music. The set comes with approximately 290 pieces, including sparkling blocks for a touch of extra glimmer. The Super Star Stage has three songs that will get kids up and dancing. The Collective Taps Play Visions for Juicy Line of Annoying Orange Novelty Products

Things are about to get sticky for Annoying Orange and his kitchen pals. Leading entertainment management and production company The Collective has partnered with Play Visions, a leading provider of novelty items, to produce new lines, including stickers and temporary tattoos, inspired by Annoying Orange. The deals were brokered on behalf of The Collective by The Joester Loria Group (TJLG), the licensing agent for the Annoying Orange brand in North America. [Read more...]

Zeptolab Reveals Expanded Licensing Program at Toy Fair

ZeptoLab, the entertainment and gaming company behind the global mobile phenomenon Cut the Rope, is bringing even more ways for fans to interact with the lovable monster, Om Nom. Debuting at this year’s American International Toy Fair is Om Nom: Candy Flick, a new augmented reality game.

Om Nom: Candy Flick, available on Apple’s App Store, is unlocked via a special tag that can be found on a variety of Om Nom plush toys from toy partner, Round 5. Once downloaded, fans can bring Om Nom to life by positioning their smartphone or tablet’s camera on the tags and watch as he virtually pops out of the tag ready to devour his favorite treat: candy. Annoying Orange to be Showcased at Toy Fair

Annoying Orange will be making an appearance at the American International Toy Fair in New York this February.  Created by Dane Boedigheimer, Annoying Orange took the Internet by storm when it debuted on YouTube in October 2009, and since then it has racked up more than one billion total views with more than 2.4 million YouTube channel subscribers. Sakar To Launch New Line of “Skylanders Giants” Electronics and Accessories

Sakar International, manufacturer of tech, toy, and electronic products, partners with Activision to create a line of accessories based on the newest 16 heroes of Skylanders Giants. Skylanders Giants is the sequel to Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure video game. The new line of Skylanders Giants will feature cases for portable devices, an alarm clock radio with dock, molded ear buds and headphones, walkie-talkies, night vision goggles, and more.

Nick Signs International Deal with Sakar for Victorious Products

Nickelodeon Consumer Products International has signed a deal with Sakar to bring its Victorious-branded consumer electronics line to international markets for the first time. The two-year agreement will run until the end of December 2013, and covers all regions including Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America.

The extensive Victorious range will include the same products internationally as for the U.S., and will be aimed at girls ages 6-11 primarily. Products for retail include digital/video cameras and accessories, portable DVD players, digital keychain photo frames, clock radios, MP3/MP4 players, CD players and boomboxes, karaoke machines, other youth electronics devices, a range of computer accessories, iPhone/iPod kits and speaker docks, headphones, and video game accessories.

First-Ever Victorious Products Launch at Toy Fair

Nickelodeon Consumer Products announced its first toy lines for Victorious with products from master toy licensee Spin Master as well as Sakar International. The Victorious toy lineup, which debuted at Toy Fair, will feature fashion dolls, role play, play sets, and consumer electronics.

From Spin Master will come the Make it Shine Doll, Tori Doll, Victorious Locker Decorator, and Victorious Microphone, all to be released in October.

Beginning this fall, Sakar will ship more than 20 Victorious-branded electronics and computer accessories, including MP3/4 players, boom boxes, karaoke machines, text messengers, doorbell answering machines, digital cameras, and portable DVD players. Non-electronic merchandise, such as computer sleeves and gaming accessories, will also join the lineup.

Fall Toy Preview: Sakar to Release Gummy Bear Electronics

Sakar International has signed a new licensing agreement with Street Players Holding Corporation to produce a new line of Gummy Bear-branded electronics. The products—including molded bear-shaped earbuds, bear-adorned Apple iPhone cases and Nintendo DSi cases, and molded game styluses—will be Gummy-textured, and will simulate the pliable feel and vibrant color palette of the gel candies.

Scheduled for release in first quarter 2011 in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the UK, the Sakar license marks the latest chapter in a 15-month campaign by Street Players to extend the Gummy Bear brand beyond candy.
