Scholastic and HandsOn Network Celebrate National Volunteer Week

Scholastic Media and HandsOn Network, the largest volunteer organization in the nation, are working together to celebrate National Volunteer Week, which runs from April 18 to April 24. Children and families can go to Scholastic’s Be Big Campaign website, www.scholastic.com/cliffordbebig, or to www.handsonnetwork.org/bebig to find local volunteer opportunities at one of the HandsOn Network projects across the country. Large-scale service opportunities will be take place in Minneapolis, Atlanta, St. Louis, Toledo, and Washington, D.C.

Scholastic Celebrates Earth Day with WordGirl

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Scholastic has announced that its TV series, WordGirl, will “fight the forces of planetary pollution” with an eco-themed episode titled “Earth Day Girl” that will air April 22 on PBS KIDS GO!. An “Earth Day Girl” early reader book from Scholastic and DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment will also be available.
In the “Earth Day Girl” episode, when the Birthday Girl learns that the Earth is having a special celebration (on her birthday!) she decides to teach the Earth a lesson. Will WordGirl find a way to stop the Birthday Girl and save Earth Day?
The WordGirl Earth Day Girl DVD gives fans a glimpse of the title episode and also includes seven new-to-DVD adventures, each of which introduces four new vocabulary words and reinforces their meanings in a variety of contexts. Special features include interactive games, video shorts, and coloring pages.

Scholastic Signs Licensing Deals for Toys

Scholastic Media has signed new licensing deals for its Scholastic and Little Scholastic brands.
Kids Station Toys, Inc. will create toy lines for both the Scholastic and Little Scholastic brands for children ages 8 and under. The toys will include cameras, electronic dictionaries, science kits, binoculars, and other electronic learning aids, roleplay toys, and science and exploration products.
Tara Toy Corporation will create a full line of craft and activity kits for the Scholastic brands. The kits will include paper bag puppets, tissue paper art, and milk carton projects slated to be priced between $5.99 and $9.99.
The new Scholastic and Little Scholastic brand toy lines are expected to hit shelves this year.

Scholastic to Release The Baby-Sitters Club Prequel Book

Scholastic will publish an original new novel, called The Summer Before, as part of The Baby-Sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin. The Summer Before will be a prequel to the first book in the series, and will be released in hardcover in April. Scholastic also plans to re-issue new paperback editions of original The Baby-sitters Club books starting in April with Kristy’s Great Idea (book No. 1) and Claudia and the Phantom Phone Calls (book No. 2), followed by The Truth About Stacey (book No. 3) in June. Additional titles will be re-issued in fall 2010.
