StrategoJumboPatch Products has signed a licensing and distribution agreement with Royal Jumbo, which grants Patch the exclusive right to market and distribute Stratego products in the U.S. and Canada, effective next year. Stratego, a game of battlefield strategy, has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. Over the years, it has been released under different themes, looks, and rules, although the goal remains capturing the opponent’s flag.

The Unexpected Journey Comes to Boardgames

Spin Master and Warner Bros. Consumer Products have teamed up to create Stratego—The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug game based on The Hobbit Trilogy, including the blockbuster The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as well as the second and third films, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

Created for kids ages 8 and up, Stratego—The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug combines Classic Stratego battlefield strategy with the world of The Hobbit Trilogy for two ways to play. On one side of the game board, players can enjoy original Stratego play with detailed artwork from The Hobbit Trilogy. On the other side, players can take on the role of Bilbo Baggins and The Company of Dwarves to find a way to escape from Mirkwood. Alternatively, players can play as Spiders, Wargs and Orcs to keep Bilbo and the Dwarves trapped forever.

Spin Master Acquires Games from Imagination

Spin Master is expanding into the board games category with the acquisition of eight board games from Imagination Games. The acquired games are Quelf, Fact or Crap, Battle of the Sexes, Would You Rather, Beat the Parents, Urban Myth, Scabs ’N Guts, and Left Center Right.

Earlier this year, Spin Master was appointed partner for production, sales, and marketing for Stratego in North America by owner Royal Jumbo.  That partnership is effective beginning in January 2011. Also earlier this year, Spin Master acquired rights to distribute the board game Hedbanz.

Royal Jumbo Appoints Spin Master as Stratego Licensee for North America

Royal Jumbo, part of The Netherlands’ JumboDiset toy company, has appointed Spin Master as its partner for the production, sales, and marketing of Stratego in North America and Canada. The agreement with Spin Master will start January 1, 2011.

Royal Jumbo recently announced that its exclusive Stratego license agreement with Hasbro, which ends at the end of this year, would not be renewed. The partnership between Hasbro and Royal Jumbo lasted for nearly 50 years. Royal Jumbo stated that “strategic changes in both companies ultimately drove the decision not to renew the license after its regular expiration.”
