Warner Bros. Consumer Products Unveils Worldwide Licensing Program for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has teamed up with their global licensees to create an array of offerings inspired by the second film of The Hobbit Trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM). Global licensees include partners across multiple categories, including toys, apparel, and publishing.

Co-master toy licensees The Bridge Direct and Vivid Group will offer an assortment of detailed action figures, collector’s figures, and role play accessories that bring the films’ characters and epic quests to life. Also supporting the film are Lego with adventure-filled building sets, physical effects house Weta Workshop with replicas based off of those Weta created for the film, The Noble Collection with high-end collectibles, Ravensburger with puzzles, HarperCollins Publishers with detailed companion books, Bioworld with apparel for all ages, and Rubies Costume Co with costumes, accessories and dress-up clothes, among others. Products inspired by the film will be available at retailers worldwide, with select offerings also available at HobbitShop.com.

The Unexpected Journey Comes to Boardgames

Spin Master and Warner Bros. Consumer Products have teamed up to create Stratego—The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug game based on The Hobbit Trilogy, including the blockbuster The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, as well as the second and third films, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures.

Created for kids ages 8 and up, Stratego—The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug combines Classic Stratego battlefield strategy with the world of The Hobbit Trilogy for two ways to play. On one side of the game board, players can enjoy original Stratego play with detailed artwork from The Hobbit Trilogy. On the other side, players can take on the role of Bilbo Baggins and The Company of Dwarves to find a way to escape from Mirkwood. Alternatively, players can play as Spiders, Wargs and Orcs to keep Bilbo and the Dwarves trapped forever.

The Bridge Gets Worldwide Rights to New The Hobbit Films

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has awarded the worldwide master toy and game licensing rights for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again to The Bridge Direct, Inc. The Bridge will develop an array of products inspired by the two films, which is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings).

The line will include action figures, play sets, and role play accessories such as basic action figures, adventure packs, beast packs, highly detailed collector figures, a basic Sting sword, a basic Orcrist sword, a Dwarven battle axe, and a Deluxe Sting sword that features a blue glow just like in the film. The line is expected to debut at retail stores in fall 2012, prior to the December 14 release of the first film.
