The Hub Network to Become Discovery Family Channel on October 13

HasbroStudios.logoThe Hub Network will become the Discovery Family Channel effective October 13. While the network will broaden its programming focus to serve families in primetime, it will continue to showcase Hasbro Studios children’s content in daytime.

During the daytime, the channel will offer a line-up of brand new Hasbro Studios’ series, as well as such library programming as My Little Pony, Littlest Pet Shop, and Transformers Rescue Bots.

Discovery Family Channel will continue as a joint venture of Discovery Communications and Hasbro, with Discovery Communications taking a 60 percent ownership position in the new channel and Hasbro’s stake decreasing to 40 percent. PlayDate Digital, Hasbro Launch Transformers Rescue Bots: Sky Forest Rescue App

The youngest of Transformers fans can enjoy the Transformers Rescue Bots: Sky Forest Rescue app from PlayDate Digital and Hasbro Inc. This mobile app puts beginner and emergent readers at the center of the story, working as rescue cadets in training to save Griffin Rock from nature gone wild.

Transformers Rescue Bots: Sky Forest Rescue is inspired by the animated series Transformers Rescue Bots by Hasbro Studios and airing on The Hub Network in the U.S.  The app is available on iOS devices.

COMMENTARY: Animation Has Long Been a Promotional Vehicle for Toys

You’ve likely heard about the massive success of The Lego Movie, and maybe you were even one of the millions worldwide who have gone to see it. Despite its financial success, some have blasted the film for essentially being a glorified, expensive commercial for Legos. I don’t think that anyone can deny that The Lego Movie is obviously commercially motivated, but does that make it wrong? Is it all that different from children’s movies selling toys based on the film?

BrandonEngel2Last Christmas, the Frozen Castle Playset and matching Barbie dolls from the Disney film Frozen were at the top of many children’s lists for Santa. Every time a commercial appeared for the movie or the toy, they advertised each other. Is The Lego Movie any different just because the toy existed before the movie? The Hub Network Adds Tiny Toon Adventures to Lineup

Tiny Toon Adventures Key ImageThe Hub Network, a destination for kids and their families, adds to its summer lineup by presenting the animated series from Steven Spielberg Tiny Toon Adventures on July 1 at 6 p.m. PT. The series will air weekdays at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. ET.

In the series, a new generation of young cartoon characters attend Acme Acres Looniversity, where they embark on a series of off-the-wall adventures, while learning the basics of comedy from their Looney Tunes mentors. Popular characters include Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, Plucky Duck, Hamton J. Pig, Fifi La Fume, Dizzy Devil, Calamity Coyote, Sweetie Bird, and the mischievous Elmyra.

Transformers Prime Earns Emmy Awards, Hub Garners Nominations

TransformersHasbro Studios, the Los Angeles-based entertainment division of Hasbro Inc., received a trio of Daytime Emmy Awards in Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for Transformers Prime from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The wins were also hailed as achievements by The Hub Network, on which the animated series airs.

Transformers Prime received early victories for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for Character Animation (Arato Kato), Background Design (Jason Park), and Storyboards (Kirk van Wormer).

In addition to its success with Transformer Prime, The Hub Network received 17 Daytime Emmy Award honors, the most ever in its two-and-half year history, with 14 nominations, as announced by NATAS. The Hub Network received the second most nominations of any kids network, behind only Nickelodeon.

For the first time, The Hub Network received three top programming nominations, including two for Outstanding Children’s Series for The Aquabats! Super Show! (FremantleMedia Enterprises and The Magic Store) and R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series (Front Street Pictures in association with The Hatchery, LLC.), as well as one for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program for Dan Vs. (Film Roman Inc., a Starz Media Company, in association with The Hatchery, LLC.).

The Hub Network also received nominations for Outstanding Special Class Animated Program (Dan Vs.), Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program (Curtis Armstrong as Dan in Dan Vs.), Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction/Set Direction/Scenic Design (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design and Styling (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), Outstanding Directing in an Animated Program (Dan Vs.), Outstanding Directing in a Children’s Series (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), Outstanding Achievement in Makeup (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), Outstanding Original Song—Children and Animation (“If You’re a Guy,” Littlest Pet Shop), Outstanding Achievement in Single Camera Editing (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), Outstanding Achievement in Single Camera Photography (R.L. Stein’s The Haunting Hour: The Series), and Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series (R.L. Viewers Get Chance to Be on TV with The Hub’s Family Game Night Sweepstakes

FGNSweeps_LogoThe Hub Network is holding a “Family Game Night” Sweepstakes, in which fans of the popular family game show will have an opportunity to win a trip to Los Angeles to attend a live taping of the series and, pending eligibility, get a chance to be a contestant with his or her family. The sweepstakes kicks off during the “Family Game Night” Marathon, to be April 7 from 7 p.m. until midnight. “Family Game Night” is produced by Hasbro Studios and Zoo Productions.

During the “Family Game Night” Marathon, The Hub will present a secret code word during each hour of the five-hour marathon. Viewers will be asked to enter the code at hubworld.com/fgn by April 11 at 11:59 p.m., and they can enter each code once for a maximum of five entries. [Read more...]

KISS Catalogue Ltd, Sanrio to Produce KISS Hello Kitty Animated Series

kiss hello kityThe Hub Network has optioned the rights to a new animated series, KISS Hello Kitty (working title).

The KISS and Hello Kitty collaboration began in 2010 with a global collection of co-branded products, from Sanrio. The collection features hundreds of licensed items across all categories, including apparel, toys, electronics, stationery, and back-to-school merchandise.

KISS Hello Kitty will feature the four KISS x Hello Kitty characters living their rock ’n roll dreams and bringing pink anarchy to a number situations. The series is in the initial stages of development and will be produced by KISS Catalogue Ltd. and Sanrio.
