This morning, Activision Publishing Inc. officially announced the latest installment of its Guitar Hero series, Guitar Hero Live, intended to reflect modern trends in both music and video game consumption. The new game marks the franchise’s return after a five-year hiatus.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games, and The LEGO Group will launch LEGO Dimensions, which merges physical Lego brick building with interactive console game play. Scheduled for release on September 27, the game will fuse a number of fan-favorite LEGO universes together, including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The Lego Movie, The Wizard of Oz, LEGO Ninjago, Back to the Future, and more.
Nintendo and DeNA will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo’s intellectual property (IP), including its iconic game characters, for smart devices. Warner Bros. Entertainment, TT Games, The Lego Group, and Universal Partnerships & Licensing revealed the first official gameplay trailer for LEGO Jurassic World today. The title launches in June for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PlayStation Vita.
On March 20, Nintendo will launch the Super Mario amiibo—Gold Edition, a gold-colored Mario figure that arrives on the same day as the Mario Party 10 game for the Wii U console. The new gold-colored Mario is compatible with multiple games that support the amiibo line of figures.
Mario Party 10 features a new amiibo Party mode that players can only access by tapping their compatible amiibo figures on the Wii U GamePad controller to bring them into the game as customizable board pieces. Players can also save items to their amiibo and use them strategically.
At launch, the Super Mario amiibo—Gold Edition will be sold exclusively at 3,000 Wal-Mart stores in the U.S.
Mario Maker lets users create their own Mario levels. This includes the ability to tap the Wii U GamePad screen to change the look of a level design to those of previous Super Mario games, such as Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and the New Super Mario Bros. U. Each style includes game mechanics unique to their respective games, and players can integrate these mechanics into designs for the various titles featured in the game. Mario Maker will launch next year, which marks the 30th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game.
In the latest installment of The Legend of Zelda franchise, players can pinpoint locations on the map on the Wii U GamePad, which then appear as beacons in the game as navigation aids. Miyamoto and Aonuma shared information on Epona, Link’s horse, which in the new game avoids trees and obstacles, just as a real horse would do, leaving players free to use Link’s sword or shoot arrows.
Nintendo won four Game Awards on the night, including Developer of the Year, Best Fighting Game for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Best Sports/Racing Game for Mario Kart 8 and Best Family Game for Mario Kart 8. In other news, the company set a March 13 launch date for Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., which will have multiplayer mode that lets players compete against one another in local and online matches on their Nintendo 3DS.
On December 7, Nintendo and Best Buy will team up to provide hands-on game play featuring Captain Toad, Pikachu, and other iconic Nintendo characters. At select stores, shoppers can play four of Nintendo’s recent releases: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, for Wii U; Pokémon Art Academy, for Nintendo 3DS; and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. The four games are currently available in stores and in the Nintendo eShop.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. local time, and a full list of participating stores can be found at Best Buy’s web site. Visitors who play the demos become eligible to receive giveaways ranging from fun Pokémon items to in-store coupons, while supplies last. At the Best Buy store in Culver City, Calif., the Mario costumed character himself will pay a visit to take pictures with fans.
With Ultimate NES Remix for the Nintendo 3DS, players can head back to the days of two-button controllers and game packs with 16 of Nintendo’s classic NES games such as Super Mario Bros. 3, Metroid, and Kid Icarus. Combining the best of the NES Remix and NES Remix 2 games for Wii U, Ultimate NES Remix lets players battle and race on the go. A NES Remix Pack for Wii U will also launch in stores, combining NES Remix and NES Remix 2 into one package.
Fans who have played both NES Remix and NES Remix 2 on Wii U will find new features and modes of play in Ultimate NES Remix. Each challenge in the game has its own leaderboard, meaning players with broadband Internet access can compare their best times or top scores with other players in their regions. Players with friends registered on their Nintendo 3DS system can also compare clear times or top scores.
Ultimate NES Remix is now available in stores, at nintendo.com, or in the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS. The NES Remix Pack for Wii U is also available in retail stores.
