COMMENTARY: Can’t Get Enough Bubbles

I don’t know of anything more universally loved than bubbles. When I was a kid, all I wanted to do was create bubbles—whether it was blowing into a straw while drinking something, blowing the water with my mouth in the pool, or using gel to make a bubble bath.

Since my early days, bubbles have evolved from the traditional solution and wand method, and the following new bubble blastin’ toys are definitely a modern way to enjoy something so simple.

Gazillion BubblesThe Gazillion Bubbles Typhoon 2.0 is true to its name. This product, from Funrise, creates a storm of bubbles with the push of a button. The magic is in the battery-powered machine, which produces over 5,000 bubbles per minute. The product comes with non-toxic Gazillion Bubbles solution and an auto feed cap to place onto the bottle, which can then be inserted into the machine to release the solution. Once you press the button to turn the machine on, you won’t be able to keep up with all of the bubbles being made!

Apr2.TMNTThe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Action Bubble Blower from Little Kids Inc. is a battery-powered bubble streamer that stands about nine inches tall. When you pull back the Turtle’s head, a stream of bubbles launches out of his mouth. But what makes this one different from all of the other TMNT bubble products on the market? If you didn’t know that it blows bubbles, it could definitely pass as an action figure, which is one of the best parts about this product. It comes with bubble solution that can be poured into the toy by unscrewing its legs. The bubble blower comes in all four TMNT characters: Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello. This is a true outside toy, appropriate for all ages, and kids can definitely enjoy it all summer long, and before the movie comes out in August.

Bike BubblerWhy stay in one place when your bubbles can zip around with you? With the Fuze Bike Bubbler, kids can add a blast of bubbles to their bikes. This motorized bubble maker, which shoots a stream of bubbles while kids ride, can be mounted underneath any standard bike seat. The best part about this product is that the bike mount is detachable, so it can be used with or without a bike. One fill of bubble solution into the machine lets the product continuously make bubbles for 25 minutes. So, when a kid starts zooming down the block at top speed with this product on his or her bike, the others will surely eat their dust—or, bubbles.

Our associate editor, Phil Guie, being treated to an up-close-and-personal look at a giant bubble made with Unbelievabubble solution by Keith Johnson during American International Toy Fair. Mr. Guie later stated that he, "didn't study journalism to end up inside a giant bubble." However, a look at his college transcript shows that during his freshman year, he did, in fact, take a class entitled, "Reporting on the Internal Workings of Translucent Spheroids 101," for credit. So there.

Perhaps the most revolutionized use of bubbles, the Uncle Bubble Unbelievabubble line, from D Now Inc., features a super-concentrated version of bubble solution. The special Unbelievabubble wand, which comes in multiple colors, can be dipped into the solution. Then with the pull of a trigger, the end of the wand unfolds, the trapped liquid stretched to form a thin, flat sheath of bubble formula. Kids can not only blow one giant bubble, but with some practice, can use the wand to catch it, and then blow lots of smaller bubbles inside it. Unbelievabubble has made it all the way into Guinness World Records, setting a new record for the most soap bubbles blown inside one large bubble at 152.
