As reported by the Toy Industry Association (TIA), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have published a third edition of ISO/IEC Guide 50. This guidance document, issued on December 15, is intended to help standards developers, designers, manufacturers, policymakers, and others in the development of products, packaging, and structures that minimize the potential for causing deaths or serious injuries to children.
A panel of product safety experts helped to update the ISO/IEC Guide 50 with changes, including clarification that the guide is intended for standards developers, but can also be used by other stakeholders; the expansion of a clause outlining the relationship between child development, behavior, and unintentional harm; new structure of a clause on hazards and the inclusion of new hazards; and the addition of a new clause dealing with the adequacy of safeguards.
More information can be found at the TIA website.
