Another music icon is becoming a doll.
Tina Turner is joining Gloria Estefan, David Bowie, and Elvis Presley in Mattel’s Barbie Signature Music Series.
The new doll is specifically designed after Turner’s iconic outfit that she wore in 1984’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It” music video. Designer Bill Greening says, “We started it right about the time she was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame [as a solo artist in 2021].”
At $55, this collectible dons a black mini dress, a denim jacket, sheer black tights, black heels, drop earrings, and a painted-on gold thumb ring. “I think the costume is very authentic to the video, and there’s lots of nice detailing on the denim jacket. The ‘leather’ skirt, black top, tights, and black ’80s heels really complete the ‘tough’ look,” says Greening. “We used a lot of screen grabs to see the hair at all angles. Lots of teasing and hairspray was involved!”
As part of Mattel Creations, an elevated collector platform, Barbie Signature partners with world-famous designers and beloved brands, creates in-house haute couture and cultural moments, and honors pioneers and heroines of their time. In a statement, Turner said, “I am honored to welcome my Barbie into the group of trailblazing women already represented and introduce more kids to my journey.”
Ultimately, the doll’s final approval was in Turner’s hands. “I was pleased to hear that this doll brought tears of joy when Tina received her sample,” Greening says.
