MGA Entertainment, the makers of L.O.L. Surprise!, headed to San Diego to launch its newest collectible range: The Hangrees.
The pop culture parody collectibles will officially hit stores on Aug. 18, but visitors to Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) were the first to get their hands on some, thanks to a mobile Hangrees food truck in the Gaslamp District and the first-ever Rooftop Pop-Up Party presented by our sister publication, the Pop Insider. Guests at the party were treated to swag bag giveaways on Sunday, featuring Hangrees with a con-exclusive “1st Drop @ Stank Diego” sticker on each box, adding to the collectibility of the first wave. On Saturday, fans had a chance to hunt for hidden Hangrees characters placed throughout the rooftop lounge.
Each Hangrees character is a parody of a pop culture staple, with names such as Harry Plopper, Ninja Turdle, Chewcaca, and Fartnite. The figures come with a parody food, drink, or snack, so that fans can feed ’em, shake ’em, and… excrete ’em, pairing the ever-popular slime craze with the 4-inch figures.
“The toy industry needs more laughter – our core target is kids – they enjoy humor, parodies and, of course, slime,” says Isaac Larian, CEO and founder of MGA Entertainment. “The Hangrees is a parody brand that is designed to bring laughter and chuckles to consumers of all ages.”
The Hangrees with launch with nine characters in wave one, including a rare chrome character.
