Toys “R” Us filed court documents to close 182 of its 880 Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us retail locations in the U.S. as part of its bankruptcy financial restructuring. Stores in Canada will not be affected.
Pending court approval, the company will close 20 percent of its 880 retail locations. According to the court documents, Toys “R” Us cites its challenges due to a shift in consumer preferences away from shopping at brick-and-mortar stores to online retail channels, and wants to close the stores operating at sub-optimal performance levels.
The company will also convert a number of its locations into co-branded Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores, according to a letter from David A. Brandon, chairman and CEO of Toys “R” Us.
“The actions we are taking are necessary to give us the best chance to emerge from our bankruptcy proceedings as a more viable and competitive company that will provide the level of service and experience you should expect from a market leader,” Brandon wrote in the letter.
The store closings will begin as early as February, with the majority of locations closing by mid-April.
