Educational technology company BYJU’s has appointed Kar-Han Tan to be head of computer vision and machine learning for the company’s Osmo brand. In his new role, Tan is responsible for furthering the development of the brand’s computer vision and AI platform to create new products, games, and devices. He will also lead a global team in the research, development, and optimization of new algorithms for computer vision and AI-enabled features.
Tan is bringing with him 30 years of experience in robotics and AI research. Born and educated in Singapore, he most recently founded Helpful Robotics LLC, which designed and built an AI-enabled autonomous assistive robot. He has led multiple engineering projects and teams both in Singapore and the U.S. He also earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science specializing in computer vision technology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
A father of two young kids, Tan says that “It’s an important moment for Osmo to capitalize on the explosive breakthroughs in computer vision technology driven by advances in deep learning in recent years.” About the company’s future, he says “Osmo is part of a new ‘space age,’ transforming what was previously imagined as sci-fi fantasy into a concrete reality within the realm of gamified learning and tools.”
