ASTRA and its members are eagerly approaching the 2024 holiday season. Our first-ever Play Awards catalog, featuring all of the finalists’ products, is in stores now. Neighborhood Toy Store Month events are scheduled for November, with daily arrivals of new products in stores in anticipation of a great fourth quarter.

What will the season hold? There is never a way of predicting how sales will go, but ASTRA’s research into consumer preferences for shopping at local specialty stores shows us that families want to shop locally and support independent retailers. The resounding message in all the focus groups regarding what drives when, where, and how consumers shop for toys was that convenience and helpful, friendly staff are essential. Having products in stock, being able to shop online with prompt delivery, and getting expert input on great toys and games were top priorities. Of course, this is where ASTRA member retailers excel! The challenge, however, is getting the word out that we are here and we are ready.

The Road Ahead

For 2025, we are looking forward to the first quarter, a time filled with Spielwarenmesse, ToyFest, Toy Fair New York, a variety of gift shows, and our own Toy Boat experience, which sets sail for its second voyage, shipping off on March 17 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

At ASTRA, we firmly believe that Q1 is when you need to plan your budget to invest in building your business, and each show brings a different approach and perspective. Whether it’s finding new products, networking, or learning, each offers options to help you grow. Members of the ASTRA team will attend all of them as it is the absolute best way to stay in touch, not only the full breadth of our industry — toys, gifts, books, retailers, manufacturers, sales representatives, affiliates, and vendors — but also to connect face-to-face with our existing and potential members.

In June, ASTRA’s Marketplace & Academy rolls into San Antonio, Texas. Following a fantastic event in St. Louis this year, our team has begun work the enhance and improve the experience for this year’s show, taking place June 1-4. As we craft our budget for 2025, ASTRA is committed to cost-effective package specials for retailers to take full advantage of the entire conference and trade show.

Additionally, regional shows, game days, and ASTRA Zoom gatherings provide opportunities to connect and learn throughout the year.

By working together with partners in our industry, including The Toy Association, ToyFest, Spielwarenmesse, GAMA, and the regional gift markets in Dallas, Atlanta, Las Vegas, and more, we see a positive future ahead, one fueled by spreading awareness about the importance of play in all of our lives.
