The board game industry is going green with the help of a new guide.
The Green Games Guide (GGG) is a comprehensive report on how board games should be more environmentally sustainable. This guide is the result of more than a year of research and collaboration by leading figures in the industry and in sustainability.
GGG contains concrete, actionable steps that manufacturers, publishers, designers, players, and everyone else in the world of tabletop games can take. The guide was created by a group of gaming professionals in response to the global climate crisis and its worsening effects on our world. The makers of GGG believe it is everyone’s responsibility to advocate for change, no matter what industry they are in.
“This is really important,” says T. Caires, a GGG board member, Sales Director for Hachette Boardgames USA, and an outspoken advocate for sustainability. “I love games, and I know that we can do better in making them greener.”
GGG attempts to harness the skills, creativity, and passion in the tabletop industry to move from being part of the problem of environmental destruction and wasteful consumerism to being part of the solution.
“The guide is designed to encourage innovation, not restrict the industry,” says Carlos Flores, a GGG board member who is also a game designer and Director of NABERS (an Australian government initiative on sustainability). “There is no puzzle more important to solve than making our industry more sustainable.”
GGG covers topics such as wood, paper and card, plastic, and box and packaging. Informative tables set out current, better, and best practices. Plus, the guide suggests what actions we can all take and why these changes matter so much.
The GGG board expects to regularly update information and welcomes feedback from the wider community.
