The LEGO Group is building something new — without LEGO blocks.
The toy company broke ground on its newest factory in Chesterfield County near Richmond, Virginia. The carbon-neutral run, eco-friendly factory is a $1 billion investment in the company’s future globally and will help bring LEGO to many more kids in the Americas.
This 340-acre site will have rooftop and ground solar panels and an on-site 35-40 MW solar plant. With these tools, the factory will generate the equivalent of the energy needed to power approximately 10,000 American homes. The LEGO Group hopes that the factory’s solar plant will be able to match the total annual energy requirements of the site.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by The LEGO Group Chief Operations Officer Carsten Rasmussen, LEGO Group Regional President of the Americas Skip Kodak, and top Virginia state officials and key partners.
“We are absolutely delighted to mark the beginning of construction here in Virginia,” says Carsten Ramussen, Chief Operations officer of The LEGO Group. “We are working hard to reduce emissions at The LEGO Group and are really excited about our plans to build this solar plant as we push towards a better world for our children to inherit.”
The factory is set to be completed in 2025.
