Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, hosted its 22nd annual benefit gala May 29 in New York City, raising $3.3 million to support its mission of helping children grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. This year’s theme, “Stronger Together: Building Resilient Hearts & Minds,” emphasized the organization’s ongoing commitment to equipping children and caregivers with the tools they need to navigate adversity.

The evening, held at Cipriani 42nd Street, was hosted by Emmy and Grammy Award winner Christopher Jackson and featured special appearances from Sesame Street Muppets, comedian John Oliver, and singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, who delivered a musical performance.

In addition to the funds raised at the event, Sesame Workshop received a $1.5 million grant from New York Life to further its work supporting children coping with bereavement and grief — a long-standing area of collaboration between the two organizations.

“It is so special to come together and celebrate our shared commitment to help children cope with challenges big and small – and to honor some exceptional people who have done so much to help children look ahead to sunnier days,” says Sherrie Westin, President and CEO of Sesame Workshop.

The gala also recognized two honorees for their leadership and impact. Darren Walker, President of The Ford Foundation, received the Joan Ganz Cooney Award for his philanthropic leadership and advocacy for equitable access to education. The award was presented by Sesame Workshop Board Chair Gaby Sulzberger, Michael Peterson of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, and Big Bird.

The New York Life Foundation accepted the Civic Leadership Award for its partnership with Sesame Workshop in creating resources for families navigating grief. Craig DeSanto, Chair, President & CEO of New York Life, accepted the award, presented by journalist Katie Couric.

“Understanding death and expressing how they feel can be difficult for young children,” says Hillary Strong, Chief Development Officer at Sesame Workshop. “We are grateful for New York Life Foundation’s partnership to create much-needed grief resources, and for their commitment to helping children and families nationwide.”

The benefit was supported by Sesame Workshop’s Visionary Partners — Joan Ganz Cooney, New York Life, Shou Chew, and Vivian Kao — and its Neighborhood Heroes, including Just Play Cares, Christy and John Mack, Ogden CAP Properties, and Pfizer Inc.

Proceeds from the gala will help Sesame Workshop continue developing impactful educational content and community outreach programs in more than 150 countries.
