Nintendo to Release Animal Crossing amiibo Cards, Yarn Yoshi, and More

In the most recent Nintendo Direct presentation, the video game maker revealed new amiibo cards based on characters from the Animal Crossing series, compatible with the upcoming Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. Both the cards and the new game are scheduled for release this fall. Nintendo also announced a new line of Yoshi amiibo figures made of actual yarn, and more.

The first set of amiibo cards will utilize an NFC reader/writer peripheral for the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo 3DS XL, and the Nintendo 2DS. It offers the functionality for scanning amiibo currently included in the New Nintendo 3DS XL system, and will launch on the same day as the new Animal Crossing game.

Nintendo,Yarn YoshiIn other amiibo news, a new set of Yoshi amiibo figures made of actual yarn will launch later this fall, coinciding with the Yoshi’s Woolly World game. Tapping one of the yarn amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller while playing Yoshi’s Woolly World will make another Yoshi appear in the game to assist the player. The Yarn Yoshi amiibo will be available in green, pink, and light blue.

On April 23, a free downloadable update to Mario Kart 8 will add support for nine more amiibo figures, including Mega Man, Sonic, and Pac-Man. Players can tap these amiibo to outfit their Mii characters in Mii Racing Suits themed to the amiibo characters.

On May 29, a new set of amiibo in the Super Smash Bros. series will launch on May 29, featuring Charizard, Pac-Man, Wario, Jigglypuff, Greninja, Robin, Lucina, and Ness. In July, Nintendo will release amiibo of the characters Dark Pit and Palutena, while September will bring Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf, Olimar, Dr. Mario, and Bowser Jr.

Launching simultaneously with Splatoon on May 29 will be Inkling Girl, Inkling Boy, and Inkling Squid amiibo figures. By tapping one of these amiibo to the GamePad, players will be able to receive special missions to unlock weapons and gear.

Finally, with the upcoming download, amiibo tap: Nintendo’s Greatest Bits, Wii U users will be able to download a free app from the Nintendo eShop, and then tap any amiibo to unlock game-play highlights from select NES and Super NES games.
