G.I. Joe: War on Cobra

Is the long-awaited relaunch of Hasbro’s iconic G.I. Joe franchise upon us?

D3 Go! and Emerald City Games, along with Hasbro Inc., have pulled back the curtain on G.I. Joe: War on Cobra, an all-new mobile game launching worldwide on Jan. 20. The game puts a modern spin on characters, vehicles, and locations from the 1980s-era 3.75-inch scale action figure line and animated series. In the game, players choose a side and build out teams that will enter combat by land, sea, and air.

“For us, G.I. Joe is more than just a brand. It’s a shared piece of cultural history that’s near and dear to fans worldwide,” says Brian Etheridge, Vice President of Publishing at D3 Go!

The new game drops players into the war on Cobra, the “ruthless terrorist organization” that taunted the G.I. Joe team throughout the Reagan years. It’s up to the player to decide where their allegiance lies.

Heroes including Duke, Scarlett, Roadblock, and Snake Eyes will battle Cobra enemies, including Destro, the Baroness, Storm Shadow, and Cobra Commander. During the conflict, players will pilot familiar vehicles, such as the Killer W.H.A.L.E., V.A.M.P., Piranha, and Stinger, as they compete against other players in player-versus-player (PvP) battle mode.

“G.I. Joe has a long, rich history and countless fans around the world,” says Richard Cleveland, vice president of digital gaming at Hasbro. “We look forward to launching a new way for current and new fans to enjoy the brand, and know that this game brings the brand to life in a new and exciting way!”

The game will be available for download from Apple App Store, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore.

In recent years, talk of a full G.I. Joe relaunch has gained steam. Last year, a Hasbro job posting sought a new brand manager to lead development for G.I. Joe and Micronauts. Most recently, Paramount was said to have begun development on the next feature film in the series.
