The POWER is back!
During the Netflix Geeked fan event, Mattel and Netflix dropped the curtain on the first teaser for Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the new animated series from showrunner Kevin Smith (Clerks). Revelation premieres July 23 on Netflix with a five-part first season that follows the aftermath of a cataclysmic battle between He-Man and Skeletor that leaves Eternia fractured and finds the Guardians of Grayskull scattered. The series is considered a direct continuation of the original series and toy line from the 1980s.
“We’re playing with the original mythology and characters, and revisiting and digging deeper into those original, unresolved storylines from the original show,” Smith said last month. “Visually we also made the conscious decision to lean into the original MOTU line of toys for inspiration as well. Mattel owns this entire vast library of that artwork, so right away we wanted the show to open with classic pieces of that artwork. Mattel has been committed to this look since they first started as a toy line in the ’80s, and now we’re leaning into it and honoring it.”
Beyond Revelation, Netflix and Mattel have also revealed plans for Revelations: The Masters of the Universe Revelation Aftershow. The 25-minute episode will stream alongside the premiere of Revelation on July 23 and is described as “a talk show and celebration of all things Masters of the Universe: Revelation hosted by the keepers of the secrets of Grayskull” — showrunner and executive producer Kevin Smith, executive producer and vice president, content creative, Mattel Television Rob David, and actress Tiffany Smith. Members of the Revelation voice cast, including Mark Hamill, Chris Wood, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Lena Headey, Tiffany Smith, Henry Rollins, Griffin Newman, Jason Mewes, and Alan Oppenheimer (the original Skeletor) are slated to appear.
Masters of the Universe is back in a big way with its biggest presence at retail since the 1980s. In addition to the growing line of Masters of the Universe Origins action figures, vehicles, and playsets, Mattel is releasing a new collection called Masterverse on June 15.
