There are few people with a more impressive resume than Barbie — from cheerleader to waitress and even President of the United States, the fashion doll’s 63 years of experience are nothing short of impressive. Now, Barbie is taking her talents out of this world and embarking on her first ever mission to space with the new Barbie Space Discovery Doll.
The first astronaut Barbie doll launched in 1965 — just four years before Neil Armstrong landed on the moon — and over the years, six subsequent space-related Barbie’s have been released. These dolls are as vast as the cosmos themselves, drawing inspiration from renowned scientists like Katherine Johnson and Samantha Cristoforetti. Though impressive in their own right, none of these dolls have journeyed off into the celestial sphere, until now.
Offered in two diverse appearances, the Barbie Space Discovery Doll features a galactic-looking, blue-and-white space suit adorned with control panels and a protective helmet. The new doll is part of a larger collaboration between Barbie and the International Space Station Lab that hopes to encourage kids to consider STEM careers.
The brand is celebrating Barbie’s launch into space with a collection of coinciding playsets. Little ones can blast off into new worlds with a custom Barbie spaceship, which includes a space explorer dog, her puppy, and more than 20 additional pieces. Barbie has even recruited her younger sister, Stacie, to assist the mission on the home front with a space discovery bedroom playset. This playset includes a bunk bed, telescope, and 15 other interactive pieces.
Alongside the Space Discovery activation is a special-edition episode of the You Can Be Anything YouTube series. The episode takes viewers onboard the International Space Station with real life NASA Astronauts as they explain the ins and outs of their job. Take a look at the episode below.
