The Toy Book catches up with Kotaro Hama, CEO of Bandai Namco Toys & Collectibles America (BNTCA) to discuss the company’s big wins and the outlook for the future.

The Toy Book: What were some big wins for BNTCA last year?

Kotaro Hama: We successfully delivered our Gundam model kits, Tamagotchi items, and other affordable Japanese anime IP-related merchandise to a wide range of customers. In line with Bandai Namco Group’s mid-term vision, “Connect with Fans,” we have been able to engage with and reach a significant number of fans by hosting model kit experience events and distributing products through various channels that cater to the evolving needs of our customers.

TB: What key product launches is BNTCA prepping to roll out this year? 

KH: Tamagotchi has become incredibly popular in the North American market. As we shared with fans at Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) and New York Comic Con (NYCC) last year, we’re expanding beyond the main units to offer a wide variety of Tamagotchi-related products. We’re also excited to introduce a new Gundam property with a lineup centered around model kits.

TB: Retail pricing has become a “state of emergency,” pitting mass and specialty retailers against each other and their vendors in a way we haven’t seen in many years. What can be done to level the playing field so that everyone has a chance to succeed?

KH: We are trying to break away from mass marketing, which relies on mass production and mass consumption. We’re trying to minimize inventory risks by delivering the right number of products to our fans at the right time through the right distribution channels. Although we are not quite there yet, we are working to avoid excessive clearance sales caused by market saturation and to build sustainable business operations.

TB: What are the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the overall industry this year, and how is BNTCNA approaching them?

KH: The major challenge is addressing the geopolitical risks caused by the concentration of production in a single location. I would like to see this as an opportunity to strengthen supply chains by restructuring global production portfolios, including the concept of ‘local production for local consumption,’ and have already begun taking measures in this direction. At the same time, I would like to achieve sustainable manufacturing practices and collaborate with consumers to understand better what constitutes a ‘high-value-added product.’

TB: Many initially thought that last year would be the year the toy industry normalized after a few chaotic years, but the results were mixed — What are your overall predictions for the state of the toy industry — and toy/game/collectibles retail — this year?

KH: Shifts in consumer values, diversification, and emerging different styles in purchasing behavior are having a significant impact, particularly in the field of games and collectible items. I also feel that we are facing limits in mass marketing in order to achieve low prices. Meanwhile, generative AI is evolving dramatically. By utilizing such tools on the manufacturing side and reducing losses in the supply chain, we should expect to see an improvement in profitability for manufacturers and distributors. I believe that such a sustainable approach is necessary for the future stabilization and normalization of the toy industry.

State of the Industry Q&A 2025: Cynthia Williams, Funko

The Toy Book catches up with Funko CEO Cynthia Williams for a conversation about the company’s evolution, big wins, emerging trends, and the outlook for the future.

The Toy Book: When first spoke last year, you were excited about tapping into the Funko team’s passion to delight fans in new ways. How did that approach help shape the business?

Cynthia Williams: It’s true — Funko thrives on passion for creating communities through fandoms, but over the past year, we’ve sharpened our passion to focus on ways we can truly scale the business with intentionality. We’re using data-driven insights to guide our expansion into new fandoms, with sports leading the charge. By forging deeper partnerships in this space and leveraging the enthusiasm of die-hard collectors and casual fans, we’re unlocking fresh opportunities while staying true to our core community. Our approach isn’t just about broadening our reach — it’s about meeting fans where they are, in stores, online, and at live events, ensuring we create long-term, sustainable growth. That means refining our licensing strategy, innovating within product categories, and strengthening our commercialization approach for global scalability.

TB: At New York Comic Con last fall, we discussed connecting with fans at live events and how we’ve entered a relatively new era in which a company’s leadership becomes a visible face for a brand. In many ways, Funko pioneered that. How do you manage the day-to-day business while making time to connect directly with the fans?

CW: Engaging with our fan community is integral to our DNA, but so is ensuring Funko’s continued growth. Balancing both requires prioritization and building a strong leadership team that also feels comfortable engaging with fans at events. While I remain visible at key events like Comic-Con and interact on social media, my main focus is ensuring that we’re creating an organization that feels a sense of ownership at all levels in making strategic, forward-thinking decisions that propel Funko’s expansion. Everyone is expected to focus on the fan and create products and experiences that delight them to drive growth. That includes growth in fandoms like sports, gaming, music, and programs like Pop! Yourself. The passion of our core fans remains at the heart of what we do, and that must come through in everything we do, not just fan engagement events. I truly believe in the importance of empowering our teams and staying clear on our long-term vision because only then can we meaningfully scale Funko, which will keep delighting our fans for years to come.

TB: Speaking of refining the licensing strategy, what trends have emerged that are compelling for Funko?

CW: Consumer habits are shifting — fans spend less time watching traditional media and more time gaming with their friends, streaming music, and engaging with live entertainment. The numbers are compelling: more than 3 billion global gamers, 100 million people attending Live Nation concerts just last year, and a $35 billion sports memorabilia market. On top of that, the kidult market — a $7.6 billion opportunity — is growing rapidly, and Funko is leading the way. These trends indicate clear opportunities to expand our licensing footprint in gaming, music, and sports while reinforcing our leadership in nostalgia-driven collectibles. And I’m not just talking about Funko Pops! This strategic opportunity encompasses all the ways fans show the world who they are by what they display, wear, or carry.

TB: Micro collectibles remain hot, and Bitty Pop is no exception. How will Funko extend the brand?

CW: Bitty Pop has been a success so far, introducing Funko to new collectors and expanding our demographic reach. We’re taking that momentum and evolving the brand with new ways to engage. Introducing road and environment packs and Bitty Boxes enables fans to interact with their collections in fresh, dynamic ways that reflect what matters most to them. Some of these figures are currently unavailable in standard Pop! sizes, making Bitty Pop an even more exciting proposition. These innovations align with our broader strategy of expanding our audience while reinforcing the collectability of our products in all shapes and sizes.

TB: How has your retail mix evolved over the past year, and how can retailers best engage with you?

CW: We’re focused on meeting fans where they are — whether that’s in traditional retail, online, or at live events. We have ambitious plans to improve the in-store shopping experience with our wholesale partners, such as branded spaces or licensed retail locations while expanding our presence in non-traditional locations like music festivals, sporting events, and fan conventions. While mass retail remains a priority, our direct-to-consumer (DTC) business has grown to represent 25% of our total sales, offering unique products and exclusive activations like Pop! Yourself customization kits. Additionally, we’re expanding our Loungefly and Mondo lines to introduce new form factors and product silhouettes to help us reach new fans and retail partners.

TB: What are the biggest challenges and opportunities facing the overall industry right now, and how is Funko approaching them?

CW: The biggest challenge is navigating economic uncertainty while still delivering innovation that excites consumers. With shifting consumer spending habits, value perception is key — we need to ensure our products continue to resonate at the right price points and are available where fans shop. At the same time, this challenge presents an opportunity: by focusing on high-growth categories like sports and gaming, we can create meaningful connections with new audiences while deepening engagement with our existing fan base. Strategic licensing, thoughtful product development, and new exciting retail partnerships will be central to this year’s approach.

CW: The industry remains in flux, but we see strong growth potential in targeted areas. Kidult collectibles continue to thrive, especially when tied to major entertainment and sports events. Retailers must be more strategic with inventory, aligning products with cultural moments and fan demand. We expect the industry to continue evolving toward a hybrid model — balancing mass-market accessibility with specialty-driven exclusivity — to keep fans engaged and excited.

TB: As you approach the one-year mark with Funko, what are the biggest learnings thus far?

CW: Every new role presents its own learning curve, but what’s stood out most to me is the sheer passion within the Funkoverse — not just among fans, but among our employees. I’ve worked with many enthusiastic consumer communities, but seeing that same level of dedication and focus on spurring joy is inspiring. Just this past January, our team initiated a fundraiser for Southern California wildfire relief, rapidly moving from idea, which actually stemmed from a suggestion by one of our Hollywood retail employees, to execution in days. My role, my responsibility, is to harness that energy and scale it with purpose. That means leveraging data to drive better decision-making, optimizing our commercialization strategies, and evolving our direct-to-consumer operations to support long-term growth. With a team that’s open to fresh perspectives and eager to try new approaches, I’m confident we can continue innovating on how best to surprise and delight our fans in everything we do.

State of the Industry Q&A 2025: Brian Volk-Weiss, Nacelle

The Toy Book catches up with Brian Volk-Weiss, Founder and CEO of The Nacelle Company to discuss the company’s rapid growth across toys, publishing, and animation.

The Toy Book: What were your biggest wins in the toy space last year?

BVW: I think our biggest win was getting the Star Trek license, but then again, I am just a tiny bit biased. On top of that, we produced our first vehicles — the Biker Mice from Mars bikes — which come with functioning lights and can really roll. Last but not least, getting the NacelleVerse into Walmart was definitely a win, especially for a company that’s been making toys for less than three years.

TB: You once mentioned to me that the toy industry is one of the more challenging businesses you’ve dealt with — perhaps even more than the entertainment industry. What changes have you seen now that you’re a few years in and have products on the shelves?

BVW: What I’ve noticed over the last few years is that, for the first time ever, adults seem to be more interested in toys than kids, and the eyeballs we want to reach have shifted from social media to YouTube. Both of these things are very good for us; we just had to pivot to take advantage of it all.

TB: With the forthcoming premiere of RoboForce, the NacelleVerse has animated content to support its toys and publishing efforts. How will this grow Nacelle’s presence in toy departments?

BVW: We just announced that RoboForce, which we partnered with [Dwayne] “The Rock” [Johnson] on, will premiere April 12 on Tubi, and as cool as that is, we also have Biker Mice from Mars in production with Ryan Reynolds.

What is not well known but is being worked on as we speak is that we are preparing similar plans for Sectaurs and Power Lords, as well as acquiring a few more amazing properties from the ’80s and ’90s to join the NacelleVerse! TB: Being in the action figure business, how is your company dealing with potential tariffs or external pressure to diversify the supply chain?

BVW: We have been aggressively looking into other countries to produce our toys, but with quality as the key variable we care about, we are not rushing into anything that won’t guarantee that our workmanship won’t be diminished if we change factories.

TB: Back to Star Trek, knowing that your fandom is on display right there in your company’s name, the license acquisition is a huge feather in the Nacelle cap. How is the line shaping up, and will its designs complement the existing figures that fans may already own? 

BVW: We have the first three waves in various stages of development, and it’s very important to me that the figures we make will fit nicely on the shelf standing next to some of the other characters many of the great toy companies before ours have made. We use modern technology to make these figures, but they must look great in everybody’s existing Star Trek collection. I frequently take the prototypes home to ensure they look good next to what I already have!

From the Editor: Trump, Tariffs, Layoffs, & Price Hikes

Life in the business of play isn’t all fun and games, especially this year.

While those within the toy industry and its adjacent realms know this well, the majority on the outside, including consumers, politicians, and legislators, are not aware of the nuances of the business. As I said in my column opening this year’s edition of The BIG Toy Book, “You’d be hard-pressed to find another segment of the consumer products space that’s faced more challenges and fought more battles than the toy industry over the past decade.”

Still, with every challenge, the industry fights back and lives to play another day. Few remain unscathed, with many emerging battered and bruised but dusting themselves off to charge ahead. Sadly, there are casualties.

These challenges, and, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, bear repeating, especially for those, including President Donald J. Trump and members of his administration, who may not be familiar with the timeline: The closure of the original Toys “R” Us (2018), the China-U.S. Trade War (2019), the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) the global supply chain crisis (2021-2022), and the subsequent inventory overload (2023-2024) preceded the volatility of today. This is an industry that has been absolutely hammered again and again.

And in 2025? Inflation is up. Consumer confidence is down. And, in the end, jobs will be lost.

Tariffs Will Not Level the Playing Field

At Toy Fair in New York earlier this month, tariffs were the topic of the moment. You couldn’t go more than a few minutes without someone mentioning the on-again-off-again “Trump tariffs,” especially when the biggest gathering in North America for the global play industry coincided with a new round against China — home to the industry’s largest manufacturing base — going into effect. During the show, numerous manufacturers stated that retail partners with open orders and signed contracts had “In as polite a manner as possible without threatening,” as one exec told me, began pressuring their vendor partners for new discounts to offset any tariff-related costs. According to The Wall Street Journal, the Chinese government called Walmart in for a sit-down after word of similar requests made it to Beijing last week. 

Tariff pressures emerged during earnings season when many senior-level toy industry executives used cautionary language in their quarterly reports. Still, some were — and still are — taking a “wait and see” approach, banking on the possibility that any escalation in the current trade war will be short-lived and reversed.

Others have added a “Tariff Surcharge” to invoices, including several specialty retail suppliers that have tacked 10% (or more) onto orders rather than adjusting individual prices.

Unlike some other industries, creating a “level playing field” is impossible when a business relies on a delicate, global balance between its players, one that’s been built on relationships cultivated over several decades. A blanket tariff, whether retaliatory or otherwise, does nothing more than punish American consumers and business owners while risking American jobs. 

Toys Are Not Steel

If tariffs are intended to increase domestic goods purchases, the concept is noble, but the execution is not. The biggest factor that most people fail to understand is that you cannot simply flip a switch and restart production in the U.S. While that approach may work in the industrial world of steel and aluminum, as mills still exist in the U.S., there is no comparable manufacturing infrastructure here to meet the needs of the toy and game industries.

The “make it here” argument that politicians and pundits often tout isn’t realistic. Reshoring production can’t be done in days, weeks, or months. It would take billions of dollars of investment over many years to build new factories, source new machinery, and create the tooling necessary to do the job. Then, due to EPA regulations and other factors, there would still be complex issues regarding what can and can’t be manufactured in the U.S.

The Myth of American Job Creation

Tariffs may spur some reshoring, but they won’t create jobs in the way that some may think. Outside of some less complex toys, school supplies, activity sets, and large, bulk items like those made by the “plastics power trio” of Little Tikes, Step2, and Simplay3 in Ohio, most toys and games are made elsewhere, and those offshoring moves happened in the 1970s and ‘80s. 

While some manufacturing is expanding in the U.S., much of it is or will be automated. 

One big question during the last push for reshoring and nearshoring has surfaced again recently: Even if companies could afford to pay livable wages for a new manufacturing workforce, who would take these jobs? We’re decades removed from families living in factory towns that could bank on a long career in manufacturing.

If the administration aims to push production out of China, it might be working, but it might not be as designed. Companies including Hasbro, Mattel, Funko, and MGA Entertainment are moving production, but it’s going to places like Vietnam, Indonesia, and India. 

And for many “Made in USA” products, additional nuance comes into play if certain components are sourced from overseas. 

The Reality of American Job Destruction

A key piece of the puzzle that often gets lost in the shuffle is that overseas manufacturing and American jobs go hand in hand. Even if you’re not in the toy industry, you’ve probably seen an Apple product that says, “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China.”

The same thing applies here.

The U.S. toy industry supports tens of thousands of American jobs, including inventors, designers, marketers, licensing agents, and more. This filters over to retailers, truckers, dock workers, warehouse staff, etc. By slapping tariffs on products manufactured overseas for U.S. companies, American jobs are at risk.

This week, Mattel filed a WARN notice in California detailing 120 job cuts at its El Segundo headquarters. Last year, the company took more office space in El Segundo, citing growth.

Additionally, reports of layoffs have surfaced from toymakers of all sizes, both public and private, including Funko and Jazwares.

A Jazwares spokesperson told The Toy Book: “Jazwares has reduced our company-wide headcount for the first time in its history. These organizational changes will further fuel Jazwares’ growth and enhance collaboration, allowing for greater operational efficiency. For all those who were impacted, Jazwares is grateful for their contributions and is committed to supporting them during this transition.”

While layoffs at some companies may have legitimate ties to tariff mitigation, there is concern within the industry that tariffs will be used as a convenient excuse for cost-cutting and downsizing, just as some used the COVID-19 pandemic — during which the industry experienced growth — to do the same.

The bottom line is that disrupting relationships overseas will have real consequences here at home. Products will become more expensive in a year when families are already squeezed to their limits. Fewer toys sold will result in lost sales, markdowns, and canceled orders. Small companies may be forced out of business while larger companies answering to Boards and shareholders will try spinning layoffs and closures into softer language like “workforce reductions” and “downsizing.” It’s a cycle we’ve seen play out before, but not with the level of sheer chaos that we’ve experienced in recent weeks.

I strongly believe in “America first,” and part of that comes down to the type of leadership displayed on a global scale. We need a thoughtful, measured approach that strengthens relationships at home and abroad for the toy industry and the greater good. 

This is a business built on putting smiles on faces, and that’s hard to do when the misguided actions of a few affect the many. Toys should be tariff-free.

Exploding Kittens and Tim Ferriss Unleash Coyote

Exploding Kittens has teamed up with Tim Ferriss for a fast-paced card game.

The game was developed by Exploding Kittens Co-Creator and CEO Elan Lee and Ferriss. The two met when Lee appeared on The Tim Ferriss Show; the popular podcast boasts more than a billion downloads. Ferris is a bestselling author, investor, and entrepreneur. “I’ve always wanted to make a game,” says Ferris.

“Tim and I first connected when I was a guest on his podcast, and what started as a conversation about game design turned into a two-year journey to create Coyote together,” says Lee. “We set out to design a game that’s easy to learn, filled with unexpected twists, and wildly fun to play.”

The game builds on Rock, Paper, Scissors, allowing players a total of 20 gestures and the opportunity to sabotage each other. Players ages 10 and up also establish a rhythm by banging on the table and must maintain the beat. Each round becomes more challenging and predictable as the game continues. Coyote offers two modes: competitive and cooperative. It takes 10 minutes to play.

“Years ago, Poetry for Neanderthals made me laugh until I cried,” says Ferriss. “Eventually, I started to wonder: ‘Could I make a game that’s just as simple and fun as Poetry, but that might also make you smarter?’ I floated the idea with Elan, and so the adventure began. I couldn’t be happier with the results.”

Coyote will trot to Walmart’s toy aisle on March 23 and travel through the desert to Amazon and Target shelves in July.

McDonald’s Builds Minecraft Partnership with New Meal Deal

Minecraft has had an incredible start to the year. Building on the momentum from its 15th anniversary, Mojang Studios’ video game spawned a new retail toy line from Mattel and the star-studded A Minecraft Movie, premiering in April. Next month, McDonald’s joins the block party with a new range of Minecraft-inspired eats. 

Starting April 1, players can create their own craving cure with A Minecraft Movie Meal and Happy Meal at McDonald’s restaurants worldwide. These pixel-perfect bites bring the open-world game off the screen and onto the dining table with limited-edition collectibles and in-game rewards.

The meal deal includes either a Big Mac or 10 Chicken McNuggets with fries, a drink, and a collectible Minecraft toy. Players can level up their lunch with the limited-edition Nether Flame Sauce. Inspired by the fires of The Nether, this sauce brings the heat with roasted red pepper, cayenne, and garlic. 

A Minecraft Movie Meal stars one of six toys that give McDonald’s treats an 8-bit upgrade, like a Grimace Egg, a Big Mac Crystal, or a Zombie Hamburglar. Each collectible includes an exclusive code that unlocks a matching skin in-game at the Minecraft Marketplace.
