Fans of Catan can celebrate its 30th anniversary — and the board game’s influence on pop culture and the gaming sphere — this year with a brand new sixth edition.

The game debuted in 1995 as Settlers of Catan by Klaus Teuber. The fifth edition was released almost a decade ago, in June 2015. The newest edition remains similar to its first edition debut, inviting players to build and manage their own community on an uninhabited island. The new version includes enhanced game components, updated packaging, and revamped art. The game comes in a premium square format box with updated lid art featuring Catan’s idyllic environment. Quentin Regnes and Eric Hibbeler designed the art, which is included in an updated rulebook and game pieces.
“In designing Catan’s sixth edition, our goal was to enhance many parts of the player experience without redefining the gameplay – redesigning our packaging, evolving the game’s art across components, focusing on functionality, and even reimagining the rulebook to simplify the learning component of picking up the game for the first time,” said Benjamin Teuber, Managing Director and Game Designer at Catan GmbH. “It was of utmost importance to us to, of course, maintain the brilliant and still contemporary game mechanics that our father created 30 years ago while giving the game a fresh look and updating it to today’s standards.
