Dan Dee International and Animal Adventure, known for its baby, pet, plush and home decor merchandise, entered a licensing partnership with Afro Unicorn, a diverse lifestyle brand that represents people of color (POC) through inspiring characters and designs. Under the new agreement, Dan Dee will create a line of plush and decor products based on Afro Unicorn’s unicorn characters in an array of skin tones.

“Dan Dee is delighted to have been selected as a key licensing partner by Afro Unicorn.  This is an exciting opportunity to help promote the brand’s mission of inspiring children of color through products that represent their uniqueness,” says Mark Matheny, head of licensing at Dan Dee. “We are proud to be partnering with the team at Afro Unicorn and look forward to playing a pivotal role in delivering their message through our broad retail distribution.”

Currently, Afro Unicorn has a line of products created to empower Black women and children that include t-shirts, face masks, and mugs. The depiction of a diverse unicorn aims to emphasize the magical nature of being a Black woman and provide a fantasy figure Black girls can relate to.

“When choosing a company to partner with, it’s important for us that they understand the under representation for children of color in the market and want to fill that void in a major way to not only change the trajectory on how little brown and Black girls see themselves but also how the world views them as well,” says April Showers, founder of Afro Unicorn. “Dan Dee and Animal Adventure not only understand it, they are committed to carrying out the vision of Afro Unicorn globally.”

Dan Dee International will release Afro Unicorn plush and home decor products at retailers in 2023.
