The LEGO Group is celebrating Autism Acceptance Month with several initiatives, including sensory inclusive certification from the KultureCity nonprofit.
All LEGO stores within the U.S. and Canada will receive KultureCity certification this month. Once certified and supplied with sensory bags, the stores will have signage indicating the Sensory Inclusive Certification. The LEGO Group also plans to see every LEGOLAND Discovery Center and LEGO Discovery Center in North America KultureCity certified by the end of the year.
KultureCity is a nonprofit that aims to increase accessibility in public spaces, focusing on individuals with sensory needs as well as invisible disabilities. The nonprofit provides certification to spaces that meet its criteria of inclusivity, staff training, and support tool access. Each location certified by KultureCity offers guests a sensory bag, free to check out. The bags include items such as noise-reducing headphones, fidget tools, visual cue cards, KultureCity branded lanyards, and strobe reduction glasses.
LEGO House in Billund, Denmark, is already certified by KultureCity, boasting its status as the first experience center in the Nordics to receive the certification.
The LEGO Group and The LEGO Foundation have more in store for this month. The company’s social media will feature a new video series titled “Love the Way You Think,” focused on autistic creators, and the LEGO Life Magazine is making efforts to be more inclusive with changes such as numbering the boxes used in cartoons to make them easier to read. These additional initiatives for the month mark LEGO’s continued efforts to support all fans of the brand.
