The LEGO Group, renowned for its colorful plastic bricks, announced a $2.4 million agreement with Climeworks, a pioneering carbon-removal company, marking another step in the toy manufacturer’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

In a statement Thursday, LEGO revealed the deal aimed at the permanent removal of hard-to-abate CO₂ emissions using Climeworks’ direct air capture and storage (DAC+S) solution. KIRKBI, the family-owned holding and investment company of the LEGO brand, also signed a $405,000 long-term agreement for Climeworks’ carbon removal services.

The move underscores LEGO’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint, aligning with its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at The LEGO Group, emphasized the company’s determination to drive systemic change, stating, “We want children to inherit a healthy planet — and we’re determined to play our part in making that happen. To succeed we must take action to drive systemic change.”

Climeworks, known for its innovative approach to carbon capture, operates the world’s largest DAC+S commercial plant in Iceland. The company plans to open a second plant, Mammoth, in May 2024, further boosting its capacity for COâ‚‚ capture.

Jan Huckfeldt, Chief Commercial Officer at Climeworks, expressed pride in partnering with LEGO, stating, “We see demand growing across diverse sectors, including consumer goods, which shows that carbon removal rightly has a place in every company’s net-zero strategy.”

In addition to carbon removal initiatives, The LEGO Group is actively exploring sustainable materials for its iconic bricks, aiming to significantly increase the use of renewable sources in its production process. In 2023, 18% of all resin purchased was certified according to mass balance principles, translating into an estimated average of 12% renewable sources.
