Monopoly Go!, a mobile game available in the App store and on Google Play, has surpassed $1 billion in annual revenue. The app by Scopely is inspired by the classic Hasbro board game Monopoly and launched earlier this year. It has also received a nomination for mobile game of the year and has consistent monthly earnings exceeding $200 million. There have been more than 100 million downloads and 150 million friend invites.
In Monopoly Go!, players can role the dice to move their token through different property tiles. They can earn Monopoly money and build properties, and once they clear the board, they can move to the next. Players can build houses and hotels from the game, as well as board-specific landmarks, and play with Facebook friends.
They can also charge other players rent, pay taxes, grow their net worth, play in tournaments, play minigames, and go to jail. The app combines aspects from the original board game with new, digital tasks. There are also in-app offerings available for purchase.
According to Tim O’Brien, Chief Revenue Officer of Scopely, the game has seen success due to the team behind it as well as player dedication and the game’s profitability. Chris Cocks, Chief Executive Officer of Hasbro, says that the success of Monopoly Go! demonstrates how the Monopoly brand continues to connect fans in unprecedented ways and validates Hasbro’s digital licensing strategy.
