The LEGO Group, one of the few privately held toy companies to report earnings publicly, revealed that sales for 2021 outpaced the growth of the global toy industry. The Danish company says that total revenue grew by 27% atop a 22% spike in consumer products sales for the year.
“I am grateful for everything the LEGO Group was able to achieve in 2021,” says LEGO CEO Niels B. Christiansen. “Our passionate and committed team of more than 24,000 colleagues showed tremendous dedication and resilience to keep the world playing. Meanwhile, our strong financial performance allows us to further accelerate strategic investments to help us reach more children in the long term.”
According to the company, its global revenue grew to DKK 55.3 billion, approximately $8.1 billion USD.
The news follows a huge sweep of The Toy Foundation’s 2022 Toy of the Year (TOTY) Awards during which LEGO took home seven trophies in the U.S.
Globally, the company says that its bestselling themes for 2021 included LEGO City, LEGO Technic, LEGO Creator Expert, LEGO Harry Potter, and LEGO Star Wars.
LEGO expects to continue gaining market share this year as it opens new retail stores around the world while investing in manufacturing and sustainability efforts.
“2022 marks the 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group,” Christiansen says. “We are pleased that in this milestone year our strong financial foundations allow us to make such significant investments in building a business that will inspire and develop future builders for many generations to come.”
