The George Sherman era of GameStop looks to be wrapping up.
According to Reuters, the Texas-based retailer of video games and collectibles has hired a headhunter to assist in its search for a new leader that is well-versed in the gaming industry, digital retail, and technology. As noted by the Toy Book just two weeks ago, the increased influence of Chewy founder Ryan Cohen and his RC Ventures — a major shareholder in the company — continues to reshape the GameStop leadership ranks.
Over the past few months, existing GameStop leadership has been pushed out alongside a refresh in the company’s board of directors as Cohen looks to create a modern-day “category killer” that can compete with Amazon and Walmart in the gaming space much in the way that Chewy does in the pet business.
Sherman joined GameStop in 2019 after holding leadership roles at Advance Auto Parts, Best Buy, Target, and Home Depot. His most recent role prior to GameStop was as CEO of Victra, the largest exclusive authorized retailer for Verizon Wireless products and services.
