Hasbro has entered a new licensing collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios to develop action figures, toys, and roleplay products tied to the studio’s upcoming live-action Voltron movie. The agreement brings Hasbro’s experience with legacy entertainment franchises to the Voltron universe, with merchandise inspired directly by the feature film.
“Voltron’s long and rich history strategically aligns with our portfolio of iconic ’80s brands,” shares Tim Kilpin, President of Toy, Licensing, and Entertainment at Hasbro. “Our collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios will further strengthen the franchise’s longevity and unlock new opportunities to engage both longtime fans and new audiences alike.”
The collaboration centers on translating the world of Voltron into physical play, drawing on Hasbro’s long history in games, toys, and licensed consumer products. The company plans to apply its franchise-first approach to the brand, aligning the Voltron property with its broader portfolio of established intellectual properties. Voltron’s roots as a long-running franchise position it alongside other heritage brands that Hasbro has supported through toys, games, and entertainment extensions.
The live-action Voltron film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. The story is written by Thurber, with the screenplay credited to Ellen Shanman and Thurber. The cast includes Henry Cavill, Sterling K. Brown, Alba Baptista, and Rita Ora, among others. Thurber wrote and directed Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, adapted from Michael Chabon’s novel, Central Intelligence, Skyscraper, and Red Notice. Filming wrapped in Australia last year; a release date has yet to be announced.
Voltron is an adaptation of several Japanese anime television series from Toei Company. It originally aired in America in 1984, with the first series concluding in 1985. Additional spinoffs and adaptations aired from 1984 to 1986, with reboots in 1988 and 2011. Voltron: Legendary Defender, from DreamWorks Animation Television, World Events Productions, and Mir, premiered on Netflix in 2016 and concluded in 2018. It is a reboot of both the Voltron franchise and the Japanese anime series Beast King GoLion.
