Mattel Inc. took another step forward in its sustainability efforts with the introduction of a new Mega Bloks collection derived from bio-based plastics.
Revealed at the Spielwarenmesse international toy fair begins in Nuremberg, Germany, three new preschool building sets from Mega Bloks — Polar Friends, Safari Friends, and Woodland Friends — are derived from bio-based resins and come in Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified packaging that is fully recyclable.
“Environmental sustainability is a corporate priority and we are proud to announce Mega’s first product made from bio-based materials,” says Richard Dickson, president and COO of Mattel. “Our Mega team is deeply committed to bringing the best products to their loyal consumers and they are driving innovation to do this in the most sustainable way.”
Mega Bloks are produced under Mattel’s MEGA Brands division and currently hold the top spot for preschool construction toys. The new collection follows the recent announcement of a sugarcane-based Fisher-Price Rock-a-Stack that was revealed alongside Mattel’s updated sustainability plans.
“Creating a more sustainable world is important to our team, our company and our consumers, and our first construction line derived from bio-based plastics is an example of this,” says Bisma Ansari, senior vice president of MEGA Brands. “Our Mega Bloks are the defining product for MEGA, so this next step in innovation allows us to create the high-quality products we know families love from more sustainable materials.”
The new line of Mega Bloks will be available at retailers around the world.
