A new addition to the UNO Artiste series is the first to feature original artwork by a living artist.
The art in the deck, featured from the contemporary artist Nina Chanel Abneyin, was designed specifically for the card game and combines representation with abstraction.
UNO Artiste Series pays homage to influential artists by incorporating their work directly into a deck of cards. This new deck was also created in collaboration with Pharell’s Black Ambition, a fiscally sponsored project of PolicyLink that will provide a bridge to success for Black and LatinX entrepreneurs launching tech, design, healthcare, and consumer products/services start-ups. Mattel will be providing a donation to PolicyLink to support Black Ambition and the collab.
Abney’s paintings capture the fast-paced style of modern culture through bold color. She offers a new type of historical painting — one that is grounded in everyday events and funneled through the velocity of the internet.
“UNO can be such an emotional game, I thought it would be fun to create cards that could speak for themselves and elicit even more of a response from the players than they already are,” Abney says. She states that she is honored to be the first living artist to be featured in the series that began last September with Jean-Michel Basquiat and expanded in July with Keith Haring.
